View Full Version : Firefox Hiccups
Anyone else having any problems with the forum using Firefox?
I get this complete lock up of the browser for about 1-3 seconds from time to time, usually a few seconds after the forum loads initially, or when I go into a subforum. This is the only site I visit that I have a problem with. Wierd, really.
Anyone else have any problems?
I use Firefox 99% of the time now and I'm here more than most. I've never experienced this. I wonder if it could be something wonky in your cache, I suppose you've already cleaned that out though. Can you reproduce this locking up on another machine running Firefox?
I dont get any hiccups in nvnews with FireFox .. yeah that happens to me sometimes in other websites with many pictures on the same page , but not nvnews .

It might be due to stuff with the site tracker. MikeC is working on some issues with it, and I'm not sure if they've been resolved at this point. You simply have to be browsing the site when the tracker is working, and that's when you'll get said hiccups.
I don't think it's firefox specific. I've been having similiar issues using IE.

Yeah, it happens regardless of browser. Like I said, I know Mike's been trying to resolve the issue. It seems to have gotten better over the last several days, but it's pretty clear that folks are still having trouble.
Excellent....
Not that theres a problem...just that it isn't my problem alone!
Thanks for letting me know that I'm not crazy. Good luck Mike.

I was going to bring this up, too...but I just figured it was a problem on my end. While it sucks, I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing it...I hope it's an easy fix, Mike!
I figured it was a prob on my end...
But I believe in a thing called love.

Mike, its 2:25 Valentines day and I had a major hickup in the forums....
I've been studying the slow forum response time issue for some time now and it is due to the log file statistics collection program. The program runs automatically at the top of every hour and usually takes about 5 minutes to complete. But I have seen cases where it can take as long as 30 minutes.
If forum traffic is particulary heavy, memory will begin swapping to disk until enough is available for the statistics collection program, which runs as a high priority task.
Another bottleneck is disk contention. At the end of the day, the log file is around 300 MB in size. The statistics collection program only processes new transactions since the last time it was run, but a significant amount of disk i/o takes place in order to get to that first transaction record.
A bigger issue with disk contention is that we only have one physical hard drive on the server. If we had two physical drives, the forum database could be put on its own hard drive.
The good news is that our CPU utilization is low :)
