View Full Version : gfFX running at 550-600MHz?

supposedly it's been done, so maybe there is still room for an "NV30Ultra" after the one clocked at 500MHz. one of the bigger problems i imagine would be finding faster RAM to pair such high clockspeeds with.
Besides, it's possible they will release NV30 versions working at a higher core speed - 550 or even 600 MHz - in the NVIDIA's lab the first chips were running error free at such frequencies.

I don't know 500MHz maynot be it's limit but it does get very hot at that. If you noticed it's cooling the fan on that runs at 7200rpms.

if you add a double side HUGE heatsink
and Fan ,to much lower GeforceFx.. like a ti200 or an Mx
i think it will not be So diferent the heat..
because a very efficient Heatsink like the one in the GeforceFX seems to be .should be able to transfer 90% of the internal
heat of video card to the heatsink.
i will like to see in the future very cool new techniques
like water cooling in retail cards. and leave the dusty fans
in the past.
if the card dont overclock to much ,and still is very
heat to the touch the heatsink, then that should mean the
card is working to its maximun levels of heat tolerance, wich mean serious problems for future core speed improvements..
AtlonXp anyone? :)
im glad to see there is Big room for overclock in the Nv30 ..
that means it is possible a Refresh of the Nv30 with much
greater speeds core . and in memory ..
if a remember well ,i read somewhere about Samsung memory DDR2 chips to be capable of 1100mhz -1200mhz.. before the end of 2003 year..

500, 550, 600 doesn't matter to me...only can do so much until that bandwidth 128bit bus gets limited. but glad to hear the chips working very good!

Yeah, I think they are working on the wrong end, they should increase memory speed not the damn chip wich already heats up yo house.

here we go again ,how SOME of you people think you know more than nvidia/ATI about graphics cards kills me, they know whats needed to make their card faster and they also know how to bring the card to market at a resonable cost ,maybe you all smart enough to go work with another card company and make your own card !(bitboys come to mind),all talk no action !

oups that came out a bit harsh !

No it didnt ;)
People didnt complain so much when the Geforce2Ultra ran so hot, oh maybe it was because it was the fastest card around then, where was ATI?

I highly doubt two things:
(1) The "normal" GFFX will be 500MHz.
(2) They will release a version initially that runs at ~600MHz.
Other than those minor things, sounds good to me. ;)
I think it's just showing what overclocking room there is, and to be honest I'm quite surprised that a few samples can go 100 or even 50 MHz higher than what I think the 500MHz Ultra will ship at. My guess was that the chips were speed binned, and 500/Ultra chips probably didn't have another 10% left in them. I might still be right... but I'll have to wait and see.

you don't have to be able to work for a videocard company to know that memory bandwidth and speed is whats slowing down these powerful chips.
IIRC, nVidia did make a few very rare 600Mhz GeForce 4 Ti to test how far the core could go. But the yields on that were VERY low I guess :)
So if they can't go over 600Mhz with a core they ship at 500Mhz - let's simply say this ain't going too well, now, shall we?
Of course, the 600Mhz GeForce 4 probably took them some time to create. So maybe we'll see a 1Ghz NV30 in a few months? Of course, not for the public. Anyone wanna bribe the engineers? :)
Uttar
A little birdy told me that they have the chip running at both 600 and 700 in their lab.

wow...can't wait to see someone with a peltier cooled geforce fx

i wasn't trying to imply that.
what i was getting at was that there is some headroom left in gfFX, whereas some people were saying there was no possible way nvidia could get it over 500MHz.

muhaha @ 600-700mhz,is the chip comin out at 500 mhz or is that just left up in the air at the moment till they decide what speed they can get it up to

there will be a 500mhz version for sure. thats what they showed at comdex.

But the chip wasn't running as high as 500 was it?
I thought I've read it was running much slower

nah..thats the ati fanboys trying to rush to a conclusion by looking at the sticker on pics of geforcefx cards saying speed as 200. they assumed it to be core clock. when actually on the upper right of the sticker it said 500/500. obviously that would be core and memory clock. as nvidia had shown. 500mhz for the core, and 1ghz ddr-2 (500x2).
Oh okay cool than :p
Haha, you see what them ATI fans can do to you ?

Why don't you comment on same upper right side below 500/500 it says Fails  :p
Truth is quality is so poor you can hardly tell what is says realy
I did some playing with PSP7 lol :D
And who cares even if it did not run at 500/500 or did run it was a Testmodel final product will run offcourse Core 500 DD2 1000

blah 1 card out of the batch, but its no where near the outrageously low 200mhz that was suggested.
I would not be surprised if the ultra version was clocked higher that 500Mhz.Remmember last summer Ati talked about 300Mhz but yields where good enough and they got 325.I guess we might have the same story here.

there is no way those cards were running at 200MHz. remember, they had cards showing demos and stuff. they also ran the benchmarks. if all that was done on 200MHz cards then gfFX would absolutely blow away r9700 once it ran at 500MHz.
someone that works for Nvidia told me they were having a lab tour for employees. He saw GeforceFXs running at 550-700MHz core. Next step is 1GHz cores :) maybe as soon as next year :)
Even if it's only in the lab, it's still quite a step up from the 300MHz Geforce4 Ti4600 and 325MHz Radeon 9700 Pro ...

Would be cool if Ultra model for 600$ would run 1Ghz Core :D
