View Full Version : GeForce 6600 GT - are you satisfied?
OK, I've been reading around on most of the popular forums and found that there are a moderate amount of people having some issues with the 6600GT AGP cards etc. Personally I bought a Galaxy 6600GT from OCuk and it was a nightmare - locking up, horrible performance etc so it went straight back.
I know for every single bad card there must be hundreds of working cards, which is the point of this thread...if you have a 6600GT AGP card, could you please take part in the poll, and if you had any problems, post them on here with (if relavent) the steps you took to get over the problem
Thanks :)
I'm a "Yes, it was fine, no problems at all." voter.
I had to upgrade my drivers to 67.03 or later, but that was nothing.
XFX Geforce 6600GT AGP. Rev 2 heatsink/fan.

Just bought the last week a Galaxy GeForce 6600GT AGP and I didn't have a single problem. Of course, it isn't a panacea for badly programmed engines or for stupid benchmarks using 100+ instructions long shaders but I haven't experienced any stability issue so far.
My chip is rev A4 meaning that there were 3 older variants. Maybe they fixed some issues with every new mask. Dunno, so far I haven't experienced any problem that seem to plague many 6600 users

By itself the 6600GT seems competant. Its nothing extraordinary if you have seen a r300. But it does offer some competant performance too. I am able to play newer games @ around 1156x864 with 4xAA in most cases with it and older games at significantly higher settings.
With SLI I can get about a 40%-50% performance increase (On AVG) In some cases much higher. I'm pretty satisfied with it. I just wish they didnt have such sorry cooling.

Bought a Leadtek A6600GT a week ago when I upgraded from a 9500pro.
Very happy with the card. Very unhappy with Forceware drivers...at least my first forray into them.
First there was the refresh rate bug in the control panel that caused all my OpenGL games to slow by about 50% when using any AA. Then there was the infamous DEP bug that affected UT2004 and almost all of my direct3d games. Finally there was the problem with Halo being unplayable once using Forceware 71.80.
Other than driver problems, the only other thing I can nitpick about is the temperature of my GPU under load. I have pretty decent airflow in my case with about 4 silent fans (2 intake + 2 exhaust) and the card idles at around 38 degrees C (pretty good). Under load the card shoots up to 76 degrees on average. Hmm...............am I doing something wrong here, or did all the review sites get way better coolers than me with their cards?

Bought a BFG 6600GT OC locally about a month ago and other than paying too much for it (I wanted to be able to return it quickly if it turned out to be a lemon), I have had zero trouble with it. Upgraded from a BFG 5700 Ultra and the performance difference was very noticeable. Btw, I am still running the 66.93 (shipping drivers) with 4x AGP and Fastwrites enabled. She idles at 38 degrees and I can run rthdribl windowed with quality setting, 8XAA/16XAF and the temp never goes above 68 degrees. So far I am happy with this card. I may try the 67.66 drivers sometime in the short future but right now it ain't broke so I see no need to fix it.

ubuntu is using a relatively old kernel being debian based and all. if i were you id go for something a little more bleeding edge like gentoo or fedora to get a 6600gt running.

I have virtually the exact same temps with my Leadtek 6600gt (540/1000). A little dissapointing but the card handles all games and benchmarks without lockups, reboots.
My case-cooling is not that great though with 1 intake + 1 exhaust fan, temp at 35-39 C. Gonna improve airflow and get that temp down.
Other than that it's been great.

I have had no problems with my msi 6600 gt and it gave me a big performance boost over my old msi 5900 xt! :)
Voted for "It was fine after I tweaked it a bit."
My Gigabyte 6600GT AGP is pretty nice, and definetly a huge boost over my FX5900XT
Those FX cards really were crap in comparison, but Nvidia got it right this time :)
Only issues I had were driver related. The det 6x.xx drivers caused crashes in UT2k4, so I upgraded to 71.80 and that caused image corruption in Halo. But now I'm using 71.25 and everything seems to be behaving itself. Only thing I noticed is a slight studder in UT2k4 once in awhile when playing online, and I'm still troubleshooting that. I've seen it before though, and I'm confident I'll figure out what's causing it again.
Overall I'd say I'm pretty happy, but not extremely happy. Once I get all the kinks out though, it'll be perfect. Performance wise this card is a winner
Well, i got two geforce 6600 gt cards and they wont run with my system ;)
I ordered a MSI NX6800-TD128 today and will get it in 1 or two days ;) Iam waiting for a working card since 24.12.04 ;) But i dont give up...

Won't run? What happens? What brand of 6600GT? What makes you think the 6800 will help? Keep me posted!

That is so strange. I'm sorry to you have to spend extra money, but at least you'll have a better card.
I don't understand why a 6600GT would be incompatible with a motherboard but a 6800 would work fine. Weird
Hehe, yes it is ;) I also think that i will get a better card with the "6800", but i wish i could reproduce the 6600 gt problem ;) Thx for asking ;)
Nice poll so far, but some of these votes should be disqualified because they haven't replied as to what is up with their cards...

Yeah, it would be nice to hear from the people who either just had no luck at all, or initially had some problems then managed to get over them...and how (throwpc)

just curious, how come you sold the 6800?
I built an HTPC and needed component video to my HDTV. 6800 series video cards do not support component out video. Besides, my next high end video card will be PCI-e and my 6800gt was agp.

Well, I voted "Still working on trying to fix...". Most of my problems (black screen hangs, reboots, etc) were fixed initially by setting max frames to render ahead to 0 in directx properties. But because of the 67.66s, I dont need to do that anymore (because it seemed to fix the real issue, whatever it was). So that problem, and the one that was initially frustrating the crap out of me since late December, is solved. I voted still working to fix though because I still get weird behavior in some games, for example missing textures in Anarchy Online, weird white shading in Scrapland Demo, blank overlays in Starshatter Demo, failed directx7 test, etc. Like my previous issue, I believe they are driver related. Doesnt stop me from tinkering around though, just gives me some hope to cling to without frustration.
Ah, also have linux issues still, but thats another ride...
