Hi all!

One friend of mine has asked me for a colour ink-jet printer recomendation and I must admit I am not up to date about this matter (I have a Laserjet printer). So, my friend is looking for a heavy-duty, good quality output colour ink-jet printer. I already know that HP and Epson both have very good quality products but they're somewhat expensive. What about other brands? Some time ago, I had an Olivetti inkjet which I was rather satisfied with.

In a nutshell: (I'm looking for)

+ Ink-cartridges price/durability ratio
+ Heavy-duty proof. Lots of printing needs to be done (in colour)
+ Good output
+ Price

Just waiting for your suggestions. Thanks.

how much money he has to spend? an hp deskjet 5500, excellent photo quality printer, its not the fastest thing around but it does the job. it also looks sleek and can be found easily under $150. it doesn't cost nearly as much for ink as something like a lexmark printer. i like lexmark's but they are too pricey to maintain. epson is just too pricey. canon is a very good option as well, but hp has it beat in quality. canon's are extremely faster though, just over a minute for a full color page.

I got my Epson C80 for about $140. Ink cartridges are about $30 bucks a piece, which is pretty standard for a printer. It also has great DPI, great speed, and can be used with USB or parallel. Paper handling works like a charm, too (had a lot of problems with HP printers and paper handling, particularly their laser printers). But most importantly, I haven't had the HP Printer Killling Problem that I've had 2 or 3 times in the past... the black ink doesn't smudge as it comes out of the printer. It's a great printer--I highyl recommend it.

Thank you very much for the quick replies. Yes, I had Canon on my mind as a viable option. I will keep you posted.

A good place to look is PCAdvisor (http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk)

From the main page, select injet printers on the right under reviews, hope this helps.

I received a 5500 as a birthday gift and at it works great. I was surprised how quiet and fast it was. IMO, B&W printing is very sharp even on plain paper. As far as photo printing goes, I can't comment because I haven't tried it yet other than the example photo, which looked pretty good on plain paper.

This might be a little more expensive, but this looks like one hell of a nice printer for, photos, printing on cds.....
