hey guys, if you could help i would really appreciate it.... I bought the 6600GT AGP replacing my 5200FX and it blows it away of course, but i just found something out interesting... when i first installed this card and did the CS Stress Test i got like 110fps.... now i went back the other day and did it agin, i got 65.05fps!!! soemthing cannot be right.... im using 67.02 drivers and my reso is at 1024X768.. im going to try the 67.66 Xtreme G after i send this and hopefully it helps, but i do not know what is wrong.... could someone help me out here? also in gameplay of HL2 i would be really back like lag spikes... im not sure what it was.... thanks

okay just got back from the VST of the 67.66 XtremeG drivers--came back to 83.50fps.... thats a big difference, but why did i get 110fps the first time? i also jsut played some HL2 to check it out, i got everything from 11-140fps... 11 was usually right after loading and a few seconds after that, then it would jump to 80... when im jsut chilling and checking out the scenery its up in the mid 100's... but when i start shooting it goes down to like 30-40...???

Anyone?

Sounds more like the game caching than the video card. Did you turn up the detail after installing the new card? What are your settings and resolution?

I know Doom3 like to the have the game config erased when you update cards. The in-game settings for AA and AF did not work after switching from 6800 to 6600 and 6600 to 6800.

Wild variance in FPS between loaded down fight sequences and sight-seeing missions of the game are normal. Give us a little more info to go on and I'll see if I can help...

did you change the settings?
Try 71.20s they are the best.
You can get them from guru3d

Come to think i did change AA to 8X but i left AF to Trilinear..... but as far as everything thing else i had them on Max settings.. Reso is like i said 1024X768... if the varience is normal then why does my fps go in the teens for almost a minute after loading?
btw: i heard that the 71.20 wasnt that good.... :(

Flip that around. Try 2X AA and 8X AF at 1280x1024 (if your monitor supports) with reflect world. You will be very happy with the performance using that setting. If you are stuck at 10x7, try 4X AA and 4X AF.

Also, run the latest "official" beta available at nzone, http://nzone.com/object/nzone_downloads_winxp_2k_67.66.html

Let us know if that helps...

okay did various tests.... all with 1024X768 reso and i was using the Xtreme G 67.66 driver, everything on High except for the following AA/AF changes
1st Run: AA/6X AF/Tri--83.50fps
2nd Run: AA/4X AF/4X--78.73fps
3rd Run: AA/0 AF/8X--90.08fps (Purple colors everywhere)
4th Run: AA/0X AF/Tri--91.46fps (Purple colors everywhere)
Original settings (with the 110fps previous test score) 98.84fps this time..(eveything on suggested settings..)
Still doesnt make sense to me at why it dropped so much... And what is with the purp;e colors that were all over the place? Any suggestions on what to do guys?

If you change settings in game, the textures turn purple. Change the settings, exit the game and you should be fine.

It's either that or you should validate your Counter-Strike: Source cache files. See forums.steampowered.com/forums for info on validating your Counter-Strike: Source cache files.

With Nvidia cards, you do not have access to 6x antialiasing. It *used* to be an option in the drivers (probably around the time Half-Life 2 was being coded), but Nvidia removed support for it a while ago. Do not use it, results obtained with 6x selected are invalid.

With the old card, you were running with the card in DirectX 8.1 mode, unless you forced it to 9.

With the new card, you are running with the card in DirectX 9 mode.

Also, can you please list your system specifications?

512 mb of RAM is going to be a bottleneck. HL2 is a memory hog. If you upgrade to 1 GB, that should help you more.

lol thats what i thought would help with the extremely long load times, that should help my video too?

I don't have signatures/avatars/extras enabled on the forums. I sometimes read at work and some people think the internet is the place for semi-obscene things.

Please post your system specifications.

I recently upgraded from my 9600XT to the 6600GT AGP, I used the driver cleaner to remove all traces of ATi drivers and installed the card with the 66.81 drivers which came with the card. I fired up the systems and tried out a few games..aka.. Half-Life2, Farcry, Doom3 and COTH:EFBB, and in all these games I found the 6600GT to be slower (read stuttering) than my 9600XT. I can't understand how the card could be slower than the 9600XT..in all the games I played, the setting and resolutions were exactly the same as on my 9600XT.
My system specs are :-
P-IV, 2.4Ghz
Intel 865GBF MOBO,
1GB Hynix 266Mhz,
XFX 6600GT AGP (500/500)
300W I-box Cabinet.
120GB Segate Barracuda 7.2krpm.
WINXP PRO SP2

Is it a problem with the drivers or the PSU?? ( the card comes with a molex connector -which I have connected - as recommended)

Also the even at idle the GPU core temps are 60C, while the 9600Xt was just 39C idle.

Someone help....please...

I don't think that card can produce that FPS no matter what the settings 1024 if everything is on high. Is there a possibility that you had it set to simple reflections originally? You should be seeing about 80 as a 6800NU gets about 90. To get over 100 FPS with 4XAA and Aniso you would need a 6800 GT or higher. I get 115 with my setup (see sig) with all high, reflect all, 4X AA and 8X Aniso.

Definetely upgrade the memory as it will help with load times, and stuttering. Also try running the stress test twice, the second time it should have cached the textures.

Hit start/run/msconfig check all your startup apps, anything there they wasn't there before? you could have a large CPU hungry app loading in the background.

i also upgraded from a 9600xt i also though that the games i was playing @ time ran alot better on my 9600xt .
hl2 seemed to have about 10fps more with the 6600gt but was very choppy , nfsu2 constantly locked up my pc after around 20 mins (never had 1 lock up with my raddy)
the only way i was getting better fps + smoother graphics was when i changed my cpu from a 2800xp (tbred) to a 2500xp-m @ 2300 :thumbdwn:
