Hello everyone,

I just bought XFX6600GT AGP (BIOS version 5.43.02.36.00), and got nothing but trouble.

These are the problems:
1. I can't even run 3Dmark2001 (nor to mention 3Dmark03), it always crash.
2. HL2 stuttering like crazy, and sometimes just kickback to memory count as if I reseted the comp.
3. DOOM3 will freeze if the enemy start to attack in group
4. Painkiller just stuttering and chopped grafic, as if I run in old VGA

I did this to overcome those problems:
1. Plug a dedicated molex connector from PSU to the card
2. update Mobo bios and driver
3. try different card driver: 66.93, 67.22, 67.25, 71.20 to name a few
4. open side panel to get a better air circulation (idle 56C, load 78C)

none of those help me

PC specs:

AXP2500
MSI K7N2 Delta2, nforce2 ultra
1GB Kingston HyperX PC2700 (kinda old... :D )
2 WDC harddrives
1 LiteOn DVD
Audigy 2 ZS
400W Antec PSU

Is my 6600 card defective? or I missed something here?
thanks in advance for the help.

What card did you have in your system before your 6600GT?

ATI?

if so did you remove all the old files using Nasty File Remover? That may be your problem.

I hope it is as I've just ordered one of these for my Dad's P.C. so I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread.

I had ATI Radeon9800 pro before this XFX thing, the fan in the heatsink failed due to dust bunnies, it overheated the core and died...ouch..250bucks for nothing.

Yes, I use driver cleaner to clean the ATI or other driver's remnant files.

remove the card, reseat it, fresh-install of Operating System. if it doesnt help, try the card on some other computer. if the problem persists, its RMA time!

On RMA u should consider gettin a different brand. Currently too many problematic cards by XFX & MSI. Bettr stay away frm em!

EDIT:
PS: which is the HEAT SINK on ur card. the new Heat Sink of XFX or old NV refrence heatsink?

Rohit...hmmm from India, Hi I am Jay from Mumbai. Anyways, I removed and reseated the card, and reinstalled the drivers and the games seem to perform much better than before.
The heatsink is the new one from XFX - silver coloured one.

Which is the better?

Like I said I'v just ordered one of these for my Dad. I have a BFG 6800GT myself with reference style heatsink.

Try a complete reformat. Sometimes there are problems that only a clean O.S. could help :D

I got the new version of the card, with silver heatsink.

Still struggling with driver, try different driver version. I start thinking of RMAing this crap (there will be 15% restocking fee...ouch!). Possibly change different brand.

Surely not if the card isn't working properly?

one thing. Did you guys plug in the molex connector in the card? I saw LOTS of problems with people spamming boards only to find out that they didn't plug in the molex connector. Also. Is your heatsync properly on? I have a xfx 6600gt myself, and it is awsome.

Yup, I plug in the molex connector from the PSU, I even dedicate one to this card, no cable split to other peripheral, only to this card, and yes I have 400W Antec PSU.

How can I know the heatsink is properly make contact with core? open the HSF?
I hesitate to do this as it will void the waranty.

BTW, idle temp is 56C, load 78C, I don't think it is an overheat issue.

Also check the 12v information on your power supply.

Wattage is one thing, the 12v information is another.

well reading many reviews n user opinions, the XFX 66GT card with refrence heatsinks are better, ad the BFG cards 66GT with the new circular heatsink are beter. IMO

Bummer :(

Just got the card today and it has the little silver heatsink....

Won't the XFX cards with the new heatsink be a higher revision = less problems?

Wasn't the old heatsink liable to not making good contact with the GPU and consequently overclocking?

Only thing I've heard about the newer XFX cards is that the memory might be 2.0ns instead of 1.6ns?

Well, many hu hav got the XFX-66GT with the new HSF have said tht. a few hu i know, have it, and are getting hi temps, around 80 -95*C.

As long as the card is in warranty, theres nuthin to worry.

Be Confident

I have a 12/04 A.3 revision. (At least the box shows this...)

RivaTuner says...
Graphics core : NV43 revision A2 (8x1,3vp)

I have a 12/04 A.2 revision.

I think they had older boards around, and slapped the new heatsink/fan on it to get them out until the A.3's came out.

Gentle

You are correct. There are two versions of the XFX 6600GT AGP. If you get the first revision of the HSF you don't want it, return it! If you get the second revison HSF it should be fine.

Here is more information about it (http://www.xfxforce.com/pinetechnotes/Fan%20Update.pdf)
