Enviornment: Quadro FX 1000 with dual-Opteron AccelerTech Tyhpoon64 MB. When I apply power to the system, the displlay (ViewSonic P815) gets it first, followed about 5 seconds later by the CPU. There appears to be only a window of a couple of seconds after the CPU starts before the display goes into power-saving mode. When this happens, none of the data directed to the screen (which I presume is vanilla VGA) is displayed. Power-cycling the display has no effect. Eventually, the X server is started, and I get a normal display. On power-down, the same thing happens; nothing is displayed once the X server quits. If I hit the startup timeframe right, the startup display works as it should, as it does on shutdown.

Any suggestions.

Sounds like a kernel problem.
Your vga mode is probably not right for your monitor.
"Vesa tng" in newer kernels won't display anything on my second monitor when i'm in a frame buffer (console) because it goes out of range, but with X or the bootup system checks it's fine.

You can change the mode in your lilo or grub config.

Which distro, kernel and bootloader are you using?
