Hi All,

To the poster thanks for the review helps a great deal to us novices, i have read all through the posts and to the end it gets down to the Rev 3 - to which i bought for the 6800GT as the fan died.

I was hoping i might get some advice on installing the Rev 3 as the diagram explanation with the kit was not that clear and as a novice - it looks like i made a right mess of it. As well as the terminology was over my head..

Ive searched the internet to find out what ive done wrong, hence getting here..

The problem i have is the card is running at normal useage of 93'c and start a game it goes to 106'c and closes - obviously lol

The process i used to remove and install the Rev 3 are as followed.

1. Removed the old card cooler - ok
2. Cleaned off all the old coolant paste.
3. Removed the sticky tape off the 7 or so spongy tab things.

4. Stuck them to the metal 'L' sort of shaped bar (the bar has raised and indented bits - i stuck them to the indented bits.

5. Put some paste (alot) on the outside of the bar.
6. Put the double sided sticky tape on the black things (terminology problem)
7. Stuck the Rev 3 onto the vid card - turned it over placed the rubber X & metal holder on & screwed it on tight.

(stop laughing)

So looking at all the posts previous to this, it looks like i have made a right a$$ of it - too much paste (me thinking more the better) and that metal thing - just was not explained at all what to do with it? At first i tried it without - and the PC would boot to XP screen then reboot - and now its working ok except i cannot do anything lol

I would appreciate ANY advice, i am off to buy some new paste this afternoon and some alcohol (non water) wipes to get prepared lol

Thankyou for any help - im loosing my FIFA2007 skills lol

Terminology can be a little tricky unless you are familiar with the slang and all the acronyms.

1. OK
2. OK
3 & 4. The heatsink has 8 raised pads. These should completely contact the 8 memory chips on the 6800 GT. The spongy things are the thermal pads which help the heat transfer from the memory chips to the heatsink. Full contact provide the best results where anything less can affect the stability of the card due to heat buildup.
5. Apply thermal compound just to the GPU on the card. Apply just enough to cover the GPU's surface paper-thin. You can apply a drop about the size of a BB and let compression spread it over the GPU while connecting the HSF to the card or you can spread it on the GPU's surface using something like a credit card or razor blade. If you spread it manually just make sure you spread it evenly in a paper-thin application.
Note: the application of thermal paste or compound is important and also like the contact between the memory chips and heatsink contact between the surfaces of the GPU and heatsink is important for good thermal transfer of heat. You want 100% contact...no gaps!
6. These are the thermal pads and the black things are the memeory chips on the card as stated in 3 & 4.
7. Use the rubber insulator so the metal 'X' back bracket does not touch any electrical contacts such as the electrical tracings or the little raised spots on the back or bottom of the card. Metal to metal contact could cause a short making the card not to work or worse could damage the card. Ensure no metal to metal contact! Lastly, secure the 'X' bracket by tightening evenly the screws snugly but do not over-tighten to the point of damaging the memory chips or GPU. Should be tight enough so that all memory surfaces and that of the GPU are in full contact and secure with the heatsink. No other surfaces of the card should be touching the metal heatsink.

Thankyou.

It is now running at 54'c after playing a game for 30 mins.

Only little issue i have is 2 of the pads do not connect to the memory chips due to prising off the old fan - i must of bent the vid card, alas at least i can get back to FIFA :)

Once again much appreciated.
