Record industry attempts to stop the swapping of pop music on online networks such as Kazaa will never work.
So says a research paper prepared by computer scientists working for software giant Microsoft.

yeha micrososft just want us all to pay for it under their palladin controlled internet... if that ever does happen ill seriously consider jumping to linux
I have this article. It was linked from Slashdot some days ago. Well, this article was written by usual computer scientists. So, the only irony I see is that they work for microsoft, which has a very consevative sale policy. So, it's like a second order irony ... :)

that's exactly it. Microsoft says that stoping music piracy is impossible, but attempts to stop piracy of their own software with Product Activation etc :p
The next Windows OS will have an inbuilt .NET P2P feature. It will also have a digital signature for each file to prevent piracy, but a company has to pay Microsoft big bucks for that signature. If a company doesn't buy the signature then the file can still be shared on the MS P2P and will spread freely. This way Microsoft effectively blackmails companies by saying "buy this digital signature from us, or your stuff will be pirated everywhere by users of our new OS". Microsoft can't get in trouble for creating the P2P feature since its not accountable for what its users do with their software and they can argue this in court with their high priced lawyers.
Everything I just wrote is BS.... but it could happen

RIAA vs Microsoft. which is the lesser of two evils :p
i would pay to see that fight.
Doesn't this mean the RIAA will also have to buy M$'s new OS and license?
