View Full Version : Double standars
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A33625-2005Feb17.html
If a white conservative said this the liberal elites would want him fired from his job and his head on a platter. Every on this board knows it. This is the constant double standards that liberals can get away with that conservatives can't. This lady is blowing smoke out her arss.
this is gonna be fun again .....

Uh, I didn't really see anything related to race between the author, Chris Rock, and Matt Drudge.
If you could be so kind as to quote the exact parts that pose problems, perhaps this thread can go places.

You seriously cannot see this? Two things, Chris Rock is black and a libera. These two facts give him a free ride. The fact that he is a liberal is more important than his skin color but never the less his skin color is a factor. If a white conservative said the same thing Chris Rock said WRT gays he would be hung out to dry by the liberal media. If you cannot see this then there is seriously something wrong with your perspective of the world.
I am commenting of this issue not what the article said about race. You should know this by now. Sorry if I sound irratated, because I am. Doesn't mean I don't want to kinky latex, GE appliance, rodent sech with you any more but DAAAAEEEEEMMNN!

He's a comedian... heh, there's not really that much farther you can go with that. Hell, that was even covered in the article.
One antiabortion blogger said it's "a mistake to treat a comedian doing standup like he's a senator doing a stump speech."As for the comment itself...
Members' concern supposedly deepened after Rock joked to Entertainment Weekly that the only black men who watch the Oscars are gay. Of course, Drudge upped the ante by suggesting that Rock said that only gays, period, tune in. Rock's actual quote: "Come on, it's a fashion show. What straight black man sits there and watches the Oscars? Show me one!"Let's be honest - the only person who could find this offensive is a heterosexual male that watches the Oscars.

The simple truth is that some people can get away with certain jokes whereas others cannot. It has nothing to do with the *Evil Liberal Media*, but rather the perception of those who hear the joke.
For example, I am a god-hating Atheist so in regard to making religious jokes, I need to be careful with what I say around certain people. Quite some time ago on this very forum I made some comment like "Let us not forget that it was also Jesus who gave us herpes." I didn't exactly get a huge backlash (this forum isn't that large anyhow) but you were in fact one of the people that got upset about it. Of course, I don't think many Christians would have said anything like that to begin with, but I imagine that if one did, they might have annoyed you less.
It wasn't that I was being pushed around by the conservative conspiracy, rather, it was that people belonging to the group I made a joke about presumed I meant the absolute worst.
On the other hand, I can get away with making liberal jokes, gay jokes (even though I'm not gay!... :bleh: yeah, I covered that nicely... now no one will ever know... oh crap, I'm still typing this!), Atheist jokes, etc, because people can presume that I don't actually mean them with malice.
With that said, I probably couldn't get away with making a harsh conservative joke, but I know for a fact that most here would laugh if it were a harsh liberal joke. There are many double standards.

Edit: I revised this once, but there was one section I forgot to add in from my original revision:
Since apparently Chris Rock is a black liberal and a comedian, he admittedly gets certain liberties here and there with his jokes, but he is far from immune to being criticized. Either way, as a comedian he benefits from controversy.
No, if it were any conservative it would have been the same as a politician and every one knows it. If it is wrong for a politician then it is wrong for a comedian. I personally didn't find it offensive. At the same time the double standard still stands.

If that conservative had a history of being hostile towards gays, then yeah it would have started things. Hell, maybe even Drudge would see fit to give it the siren.gif! If on the other hand, that conservative were gay, had a history of defending gays, or even simply be indifferent towards them, then there would be no issue.
And seriously... drop the whole victimization-thing. It's so unbecoming.
comparing what a comedian can say and get away with to what a politician can say is ludicrous. politicians as public servants have to be held to higher standards and are judged differently, whilst comedians have a "comedic license" that allows them to get away with stuff others wouldn't be able to, regardless of their political beliefs. but, people are always easily offended.
No one is claiming to be a victim. I don't go that route. I am saying there is a double standard. The history has nothing to do with it. You can say one blue comment and the left will explode and demand your head.

True but the left does it all the time.
