Is it true that you could plug a 1X PCI Express card in a 16X PCI Express Slot?

Someone told me you can. Is this true?

I think I also read that, but why on earth would someone do that?

Maybe they have a 1x device and only a 16x slot? Then they would be using PCI video though... hmm :eek2:

Some boards, SLI capable, have two x16 slots. When not using the second slot for SLI mode (which changes the two slots to both x8 mode), it can be used as an x1 slot.

So it could be done, just no need at this time. All of the PCIe x1 cards that I've seen so far are for Gigabit Ethernet LAN, and wouldn't you know it, every single SLI board on the market has a Gigabit LAN interface already on the MOBO. Mine has two for instance, one part of the Northbridge, the second a PCIe Marvell from 3COM.
