I recently upgraded my compaq Duron 700 MHZ machine from a Riva TNT II to a NVIDIA TI4200 card.

The system is set up to dual boot with Windows ME and Red Hat 7.2.

The Windows side seemed to install smoothly and now runs 3-D graphics much faster. Linux was not so smooth. The Linux auto installer apparently does not recognize any NVIDIA boards newer than the GEFORCE 3 models. as a result the X server now crashes. I can still boot into the console but can not go any farther. I have done a complete re-install from the RED HAT disks without success. I have also downloaded both the binary and source RPM files from the NVIDIA web site.
The binary would not install correctly. the source would not compile correctly. Also there seems to be an error in the XCONFIG86-4 file. I down loaded the September 2002 RPM from NVIDIA. Everytime I get Linux to the point where I can do something useful with it, I manage to screw things up and have to start over losing all the good stuff that I had working.

Any suggestions would be highly welcome.

I am also having this problem (same video card) under debian stable with 2.4.19 kernel. XFree86 version is 4.1.0.1

it looks to be a very comon problem though, so I should have an answer soon. I still gotta look through these forums and my PC some more. my friend runs unstable and his XFree version is the same but his lists Geforce4 cards as supported when starting X.

unfortunately Im having to browse the web on a 166mhz laptop with mozilla. painful to say the least 32mb ram).

my friend's logs made it obvious what was wrong.

edit your /etc/X11/XF86config-4 file. findth driver for your video card. change it from "nv" to "nvidia". silly me, Id forgotten that Id left it as nv after I had some problems with opengl with my old TNT2. finally, I can run X on a real system that has te resources for it :-)
