After reading some very positive reviews in Maximum PC and PC Gamer I'm thinking of giving NOLF 2 a spin. It's on sale for $27 at Newegg, but before I leap I'd like to know what you all think about the game. How's the story? How's the action? Is it really as amusing as places are portraying it?

Too much find the key/file/paper/password type gameplay. It's fun, but it drags at times. It isn't nearly as good as the childish Maximum PC review made it out to be.

I thought it was well worth the price of admission :p One of the main reasons is that it is very funny, from start to finish. As nin_fragile14 said, there is alot of find this, then this type stuff, but to me that isnt so bad, as you are a spy and thats your job :D Games graphics were nice and the only problem I found, is that them game seems to suffer from a memory leak or something, after you play for a bit, it can get choopy and load times get longer, even if its a quicksave. It would be a good idea to go look at some fan sites, and read thier forums to get some more feedback.

I was thinking about that before I read what you said, nin. Claiming it's the best FPS game ever is mighty strong. I played the demo a bit and didn't think it was anything too spectacular. Definitely not as good as Half-Life (the best FPS ever I don't care what anyone says).

But based on the responses here, methinks I'll save my money on this one. :)

Yeah, I agree with that, Half-Life still is, sadly, the best FPS ever made. That or Metroid Prime.

Maybe so but the HL mod community is still the strongest, because Valve actually supports it even after 4 years of existence. And there is no slowing down. If you look on gamespy, there are 100,000+ players in HL and no more than maybe 8 or 9k in any other game.

Not to mention the single player game was very innovative and unique. These things no only make it the best FPS of all time in my opinion, but the best PC game of all time as well. Long live HL!

I thought NOLF 2 was the best game I'd ever played. We need more games that don't take themself way too seriously.

The early Japan levels don't strike me as spectacular, but eh. Too weak weapons for me <G>

I'm strictly talking about the single player experience, which is all NOLF 2 is really. Deathmatch MP support should be coming soon hopefully.

I agree that MP Half-Life blows (Counterstrike not withstanding) in comparison to UT, but on any other scale you can't compare them.

Deathmatch is in NOLF 2 right now. (1.2 was released at the same time as a DM map pack)

I'm stickin with SP, and maybe I'll get in some co-op with bro soon.

Valve milks HL for all its worth and more, that's why they "support" it. because they either can't or won't release something better like TF2 or HL2, or any other new tech for that matter.

they give us rehashed expansion packs and GOTY editions over and over, as well as retail versions of mods. while admirable, i'd like to see Vavle devote some time and effort to something new as well as supporting the mod community.

HL was and is the best single playe rgame ever.

I'm still hoping for D3, though...

i bought nolf2 and have completed it a few weeks ago....i would say it was worth ever dollar i spent on it. someday it will be a classic, just like half life, rtcw, mohaa,UT, etc etc etc....if i were stuck on a deserted island, and could only have 1 game with me to play over and over, i would rather be stuck with unreal tournament(original) than half life though..it is just so futuristic and intense.**not that i dislike halflife, i just thing ut is better for multiplayer.

i agree. UT was a better multiplayer game than HL was, as it should be, since UT was designed as a multiplayer game, whereas HL wasn't just a multiplayer game, but mostly a single player one.

For you and the 10 others who played it. Not trying to knock you, but I'm just saying it's a shame it never really took off. I bet it would have been much bigger had they made the GeForce3 enhanced version available to the general public. :(

If its between that and games like Nightfire, keep milking away Valve and Gearbox...

I just wish that I could find one of the original copies somewhere, so I didn't have to shell out $50 for a legit copy of the game.

yeah, but the reason Nightfire is so crappy is because it uses the limited HL engine and tries to do too much with it.

Nightfire is a product of milking.

Go for NOLF2. It's funny enough to be worth it. A couple examples are below, paraphrased but close enough:

-----Spoilers, with some space below------------

When Kate is sneaking around in a Siberian compound she overhears two Russian guards. One says "My family is so upset and depressed. My brother got arrested by the authorities yesterday for having American capitalist literature." The other guard says, "What was it, pornography?" The first guard replies, "No, much worse, it was investment planning."

And when Kate is sneaking through the early Japan levels she hears a conversation between two female Ninjas dressed in hot looking, snug fitting clothes. One of them says "My grandmother is SO uptight about us, she is so mad at me, she told me 'You do NOT dress properly for a Ninja,' so I told her like 'Grandma will you like get with it, THIS is the SIXties.' "

--------------------

The detailed faces of the characters add a lot to the humor as well as gameplay, and even to the graphical experience. Like with guards sneaking a smoke while on duty. Or the expression on the face of a scientist in a white lab coat while working on Unity's spy gadgets. And that's during gameplay, not just cutscenes.
