Terrorists, natural disastors, despot states. And here is europe granting immunity to the name of a god damn food product.

Perhaps they should concentrate on some of the more larger problems in the world instead of making sure somebody from another country isn't making champagne ;)

well at least you bitched, right? ;)
this may be a small matter but it needs to be addressed just like all others, there is no discrimination here.

Why does it need to be addressed? It is the name of a food product, this is a prime example of how pathetic the EU is. So much pointless legislation and no balls to act on anything.

no, the original intention for this came from the folks who have economic interest in such a protection, e.g. the companies who produce the sh|t. if brought up, backed by local government officials and pushed to be brought into practice, someone will have to deal with such things.
i mean cmon, there is a hell lot better reasons out there you could bring up if you want to bitch about the eu. go find something more interesting for fscks sake :p

it aint. its particularly bad for competition even though we are talking about a very limited product group here.

Or how our evil weight system had to be changed so some unfortunate french person did not buy 1 pound of bananas and not 1 kilo. Imagine the chaos!

hey, you gotta admit - one weight system is all we need really. you blow yourself up trying to be offensive :p

I see both sides, I dislike change for changes sake, but international standards are useful regardless. The amount of mixups Nasa have made in the km/mi conversions their software does is a clear example of this. Europe's mistake is being led by federalists who want a federal state, but the power is in the hands of soverign nations. It has to either be federal, or be a trading union. The current halfway house just does not work.

Why? Because other countries are too ignorant to learn the customs of another country? And why do we need your currency? Been a part of the mighty european community only benefits people if they are not British or are not Jews.
If we were to ever back out of Europe you could kiss that wonderful military goodbye. :p

The risk of britain been swallowed as a state is there, which I don't think would go down too well... that said the sheer amount of differences betwee the two coutnries I doubt that would happen. It would certainly be an interesting trade block and one that would defintely rival the EU. The only difficulty is geography, which is a major advantage the current EU has and part of the reason it manages to work.

There was a big post about this on rage3d awhile back. Basically, since England is in Europe, but not Of Europe (a very unimportant person said that once ;) ) and they have more in common with the US, we should form a nation together. We can take the best of both nations and jettision the worst. Sorry, but after the Queen Mum dies the last of the true Monarchs will be gone so it will have to end.
I think it would be a great thing.

I don't consider the UK part of Europe. That would be highly insulting to our British allies.
