Awesome! I'm looking very much forward to the review on that monster. :)
Damnit! My board doesn't have any holes around the cpu area, so I can't use any of the "big" HSF's available!
I'll probably get this one...

...and add a 90mm fan to it. :)

Heh, good points. :) In my opinion the precise size isn't as important as is the fact that you have a solid (un-spread) blob for the HSF to then press out when applied. This removes any chance of air bubbles forming (which spreading on your own can cause) and they are the biggest culprit in the heat insulation factor. So, I think you're fine in how you did it. :)
I have an XP-90 installed on my new DFI. Your instructions worked great as my idle temps are around 27 degrees Celsius.

i own a xp-90 and was getting ready to buy a newer hs, but after reading your review i will keep it. i was thinking about putting an adapter on it and using a 120mm fan. would i be making a mistake?

I've use adapters before, basically it should allow more airflow from a quieter fan. I'm not sure how relevant this review is though, as it is 4 years old.
Welcome to the forums btw. :)
