View Full Version : Doing the A64 thing..again
I'm very near finalizing my specs on a new A64 setup....I want all this platform has to offer...especially PCI-e for a next gen. vid card this summer :D. Here's what I have in mind.....please let me know what you think any ideas and comments are welcome BUT don't bring up SLI...I have no interest, thanks.
-AMD Athlon 64 4000+
-DFI "LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D"
-Corsair XMS 2gb (4x512MB) PC-3200 cl2-3-3-6 1T
-eVGA 6800 GT PCI-Express
Everything else will carry over from what I have now....

just be sure that your athlon will not default to ddr333 cause you are using 4 ram sticks
Yup what Zommie said, your better off getting 2x1024 pc3200.
Otherwise good stuff.

Hm its a nice setup, however i thought you sold your fx due to you felt there wasent enough preformance. Maybe you should wait for a higher clocked a64 to come out?
Other than that, it sounds like a great system, just wait for the next gen video card to come out and have your way with it ; )
Thing is, the latencys of the big 1gb sticks are very high and the cost is crazy.....To get even cl2.5 3-3 @ PC3200 is $675!!!

The cost of the CorsairXMS above is $390 and its PC-3200 cl2-3-3-6 1T
I'm also considering OCZ VX :) PC3200 which is $490 total for 2 2x512mb kits ....and that is the LOWEST latency memory money can buy ...
btw....Anandtech doesn't seem to think there is an issue with all the Dimms filled...:)

Its a long story....but why I sold it had nothing to do with its performance......MUYA definately got the good end of that one :)
My FX was going strong...when I started having network issues, I couldn't find the problem so I thought it was yet another A64 motherboard bug...in anger I pulled the system down and went back to the P4EE....about a week later I found the real issue to be a bad Linksys router
Been wishing to go back ever since ....

interesting. i always thought that having all the DIMMs full would cause that stupid ddr333 thing. but i have a winchester core (which is new) so maybe i could fill my DIMMS and have ddr400.
After an extremely long day of reseaching to the point my eyes were burning....This morning I finally pressed the order button.
My time spent was all about getting the value vs. what parts I have to sell, moving to the A64 platform and having future upgrade-ability.
I went with:
-A64 4000+(retail)
-MSI K8N Neo4 SLI-D
-(1)eVGA PCI-e 6800Ultra
I'm giving the MSI board another go....it seems the kinks are out and they have great performance and features. And I not doing SLI cards right off the bat.....we'll see what the futher holds, but SLI is now a definate possibilty :)

I think you have chosen wisely. The FX isn't worth the price premium.
What kind of RAM did you settle on?
anybody in Hong Kong want my FX53??? why???

That memory should work beautifully. Good choices on all your components. :D
And I agree that the Neo2 is overrated btw. ;)

Not for performance I don't think. But I still wouldn't buy another one because of the crappy layout of the IDE, floppy and SATA ports.

It is for the crappy layout, among other things, that I think it's overrated. The performance is virtually the only thing it has going for it. ;)

The performance is virtually the only thing it has going for it.
And it's only overclocked performance at that. At stock speeds it's nothing special.
Its running nice, after I worked out the kinks....
I wasen't aimming for massive OCs (that's what DFIs are for ;) ), but I did get it right where I wanted it
@ Vcor 1.55v the system is solid at 236x11~2.6ghz, x4 HTT, RAM 1:1 Vdimm 2.7v 2.5 3-3-7 T1
I'm waiting on an "Arctic-Cooling Silencer NV5" for the vid then I'll get clocking on that.
I also (finally) moved the PC under my desk, its always been up by my right, I'm enjoyong the quiet already......its going to be fantastic with the Silencer on :)
