I just finished configuring a new computer for a friend and for the past few days, I realized something. It's not that expensive anymore to make a PCI-E system.

Check out these deals.

ATI Radeon X800XL 256MB
http://www.compusabusiness.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=50881768
- this card is like as fast as 6800 GT, and it also has decent overclocking headroom
- for $272 when a 6800GT PCI-E or X800 Pro VIVO PCI-E are like $390 in the best case, can anyone say steal at this price?

Chaintech VNF4/Ultra
http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?description=13-152-049&DEPA=1
- $99 for a NF4 with PCI-E
- has the SATA 2, and other regular features, I think it's awesome for the price

Athlon 64 3000+Winchester
- wherever it's like $150-$160
- for $150, pair it with a good HSF, this thing should be pretty sweet

That's around $530 for total price. I think a lot of people will find deals like these very useful. IMO, the X800XL for $272 is basically a steal, when it's as fast as X800XT-PE if overclocked a bit probably, but for like HALF the price.

The XL is really that good, huh? It still sucks in OpenGL though, right?

They don't really suck in opengl... its just that compared to nVidia, they well... suck in opengl :p

They have been getting better however.

hmm...it's just that...I love my 6800GT. But, it's AGP, and I want to make the PCI plunge (I don't trust the nForce3 chipset)...and if the XL is so good and so much cheaper...

I'd really like to get an AIW card or a Personal Cinema. I wish a 6800 based Personal Cinema would come out already, cripes.

I don't see how you can say they "suck" in OpenGL. Yes, it's slower than a 6800GT, but are you REALLY gonna play Doom3 all day or something. That's like the only game that taxes it anyway, cause other games like CoD run 100fps on cards like 9800 Pro too. Still, I could care less if it's slower in Doom3 at the moment. That would be the least of my worries.

I go by what reviewers say and they say it "sucks" in OpenGL. What do you want from me?

i think the biggest reason i bought an 6800GT over an ATI card was the fact that i can add a 2nd 6800GT later and run in SLI mode..

i have to admit that the SLI aspect really gives nvidia a leg up for people like me..

It not that expensive no more but to me it is since I just got all my new parts about four months ago,But if you are upgradeing now then you can get some good deals,The X800XL PCIe is a great card and has a real good price for a PCIe card ,IMO there are a lot better than a 6800GT ,they are faster in all games and even Doom3 they run it more then enough FPS ,the 6800Gt is barely faster then the X800XL in D3,I think ATI will sell a lot of the X800XL because right now that is the best deal for the money.I mean you get a 16 pipeline card running at 400mhz and most overclock decent ,plus you have DDR3 memory running at 500DDR3(1000) I think actually defaults to 980mhz,but it has 2ns DDR3 and that usally overclocks past 1100mhz easy.
