First of all, my setup (nothing is overclocked):

BFG Geforce 6800NU AGP 128MB
Soltek K8AN2E-GR Motherboard
Athlon64 3200+ (S754)
1024MB PC3200 Memory
*nVidia DVD Decoder -- Not Used*

Folks, earlier today I thought I'd try the new 71.84 WHQL drivers with the latest build (3802) of Windows Media Player v10 to see if I can finally get the HD 1080p video clip of Step Into Liquid to finally play without skipping frames. To my surprise, it's WORKING. I noticed that the CPU usage was usually between 70 and 85%, and only once did it touch 90%. It's no longer a constant 100% like before. I tried the 720p clip and my CPU usage was anywhere from 45 - 55% on average.

Download WMV-HD Clips (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/content_provider/film/contentshowcase.aspx)

Is anybody else able to play these clips without losing frames? To me, it looks like nVidia was able to squeeze a little juice out of the 'broken' 6800s afterall. One clip that was really giving me trouble previously was Alexander. I'm gonna test this one too once it downloads to see how it goes!

Do you have the nvidia dvd decoder installed? And if you do does it come on when playing the wmv file?

Well with 71.84 Terminator HDTV clip plays very well full screen CPU usage jumps from 50% to 69% back and forth also i had few extra apps running in background no skipping of any kind very fluid, however im not useing Windows Media Player v10 ,personaly never liked it ,to bloated for me plus also Skips frames on HDTV clip for me ! , i use Media Player Classic and bunch of other Codecs.
Nice to see you got it running well on your WMP thought. :)

Edit: I do have Nvidia DVD Decoder however i have no clue if its beeing used at all. Also older drivers played well this clip for me even with WMPayer10, some betas totaly messed it up makeing it fuzzy at full screen 71.84 seems to fix it but not for WMP10 , hmm all this must be driver related.

I have always been able to play those 1080p vids with less than 50% CPU usage. I don't get any skipping. I don't even get skipping on my 2.4Ghz P4 machine with a 9800 Pro on board.

This is interesting.. will report back briefly..

This may be old news to some but i just found out that having Fast Writes turned off in my BIOS causes 100% CPU usage(and skipping) when playing Step Into Liquid video(1080i version), with Fast Writes turned on i get less CPU usage and no skipping :)

I get %35-%40 CPU usage with the antivirus and messenger running in background :) I think it works then!

And... wow, you have 1024GB RAM :p

Thats a lot of RAM  :) :) :)

I got 45-55% CPU usage using the Terminator 2 demo.

Have you tried step into liquid?
T2 plays fine here too, but step gives me 98-100% and turns into a slide show.
I have everything but the dvd decoder, so that's probably why.

I have all the above and the dvd decoder and there is no hardware acceleration. Remember if the dvd decoder isn't in your tray when playing the wmv there will be no acceleration.

Yeah I noticed the same thing. Turning off fastwrites really degrades performance on these high definition videos. When I turn fastwrites back on, they play very smooth.

Did you have hyperthreading enabled?

Mmmm well did i hear saying in the past that the option 'Fast Writes' accelerate's in your system must be on, without it stutters and had less fps.
Its not particulair that it is fixed with your vid-card drivers, new chipset drivers and other damn fine codec with help support the controlling mechanisme of your HW and software.
There are more parts still been fixing, HW is allready okay but the software seems always dismissed several parts of understanding.

At least u been turned over now :D

Got 67.66 installed at the moment (hah! As in really old not a typo)
But will run some tests with it using the NVidia decoders and

That movie kicks ass, but first I have to drive to London and back.

Combined with all the factors i noticed that everything works greatly with amazing detail exposed on my CRT.
Even the quality of the I-Max can be retaken and passed when seen here and there unwanted mismatches of the camera. :D

Trully tested it with every latest codec and it runs nicely with the NVidia DVD codec specially under Windows MCE.
Gentlemen it's pleasure to see all working now, so up for the new WHQL drivers included without the temp bug and OpenGL 2.0+ support!

I think there the trial is 30 days

Well, I don't have the Nvidia DVD codec installed but Step Into Liquid is now running smoothly with my system. The CPU usage is still high (80-90%). If the Nvidia codec is required to get hardware acceleration, I guess my improvement is coming from my current system (A64 3500+). Before I tried running it on a XP 3200+ based system and it wasn't smooth at all.

I should probably mention that I wasn't running the DVD decoder (I don't think that it's needed for WMV-HD, correct me if I'm wrong). Maybe CPU usage would be less with it, don't know (the trial period ran out) but the bottom line is that WMV-HD seems to play much better now with or without it.

Yeah, I get about 60% CPU usage using the older drivers.

If I play anay HD video in WMP10, i get very high CPU usage, but if I play them with DivX player, I get around 50ish cpu usage.
why is that?

I'm using good ole' 67.03 drivers

and since when does 9800 pro = 6800 ?

you guys shouldnt worry about WMVHD so much try a Transport stream HD capture in powerdvd 1080i . 10% CPU utilization using Hardware accelerated video and it looks better than WMV compressed bloated crap. Its really amazing how much power it takes and seeing powerdvd play Shrek 2 1920 x 1080i using 10% cpu utilization and not losing one single frame.
