I picked up a 80GB Maxtor w/ 8MB cache while I was home for TG at Fry's Electronics (It was only $50). It's 7200RPM and has FDB (fluid bearings). I couldn't find any reviews of this drive, but it seems pretty dang fast compared to my 40GB IBM 60GXP.

What are some good hard drive benchmarks to run? I ran pcmark2002 on an nforce2 board and got a 1175 on the HD part. My IBM 60GXP got 640 on a kt266a MB, some of that discrepency may be attributed to MBs though...

SiSoft Sandra is an excellent all around benchmarking prog.

I believe that it is up to version 2003.

I would only recomend using it to bench your drives though:D :D

I've seen reviews, but they were for the WD 80GB drives, good imrpovements over standard 2MB caches...they used Sandra so give Sandra 2003 a go.

Well I ran sisoft here are the results...

IBM 60GXP w/ KT266A ATA100 = 16380

Maxtor 80GB 8MB cache w/ nForce2 ATA133 = 31298

I would like switch the MB-HD combos but it would take too much time as I would have to do clean installs and everything so take these with a grain of salt.

i barely get 20000 with a ibm 60gxp on a kt333. i don't think a nforce2 would allow it to perform as fast as the maxtor.

Maxtor 80GB 8MB cache w/ nForce2 ATA133 = 31298

That's a really good score. It's almost the same score I get with mine but I only have ATA100 *points to specs*

I went to www.storagereview.com and looked at their database. They have the "Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 8MB" which when I put the cursur over it shows up as SY160PO, mine shows up as SY80PO so I am assuming it's the same drive less platters. They should have a review of it soon, but from the database figures it seems to be a little bit slower than WD 8MB drives. Man that WD2000JB is a monster...

When I got my 37.6 GB Ultra160 SCSI HD with 4 MB of cache, I ran Adaptec's SCSI Bench 32 to compare it to the old 9.1 GB u2w/LVD SCSI HD with 1 MB cache. It seemed to work OK, comparing them at 18.5 MB/sec sustained transfer on the old drive, and 37.5 MB/sec on the new (this was an older version of the u160 x10 Cheetah bought 2 years ago, not the model you would buy today which has, well been improved.

The only thing with this, I'm not sure I would trust SCSI Bench 32 results with IDE HDs, I remember reading where some got some wierd (not most believable) results when they tried it on some of their UltraATA drives.

I get about 32000 on Sandra with my WD800JB on the below setup. You can feel that extra speed, a great upgrade IMHO...

Just finished putting in my new 80gig, it is definitly noticably faster than my Maxtor ATA133 40gig. I really like it.
