Since I haven't used any workstation GF before.. I was just wondering ...

With a normal when doing 3D work, the GPU works only during the modelling part when it actually renders real-time and shows me a preview (in 3DS Max for example).

The rendering is done 100% by the CPU...

With a workstation GF the graphics card (e.g. a Quadro FX) does work during the Rendering .... but is the CPU working as well?

so is the final rendering done with CPU + GPU ?

Thanks

well from using Maya on a Quadro from what i can tell rendering a scene only uses one processor. the "use all available processors" option refers to systems with dual xeon cpus for example. 3dsmax may be different though.

if that's the case... what's the point of buying a workstation GF ???

I'm pretty sure that an Athlon64 3800+ would render faster than the low end Quadro ..

its all about the materials and fabrication process i suppose. reliability, etc. are a huge concern for businesses. the computers i work on get absolutely abused running Maya, After Effects, etc. all day and all night.

These cards do NOT help in rendering.
Only viewport rendering, and that puts some different demands on the card then gaming hence the need for Pro cards..
Tried modding my Geforce to a Quadro FX 4000, the viewport in 3dsmax felt alot quicker..

But there is a renderer called "Gelato" that will use the GPU in the rendering process along with CPU, I think it can be plugged into a few different Programs, the 3dsmax version isnt out yet.
