This is not answer to your question but rather things i know happen with these drivers.
Specs
Suse 8.1 with kernel 2.4.20
Using WindowManager as workground
Asus A7V-133c
AMD Duron 1Ghz "Morgan"
1024 MB RAM
Gainward Geforce4 MX440 64MB tv-out
Soundblaster 128 PCI
Alliance 10/100Mbit (realtek8139)
2*80GB Western digital ide
LG 40x cd-rw
Heres few problems
When using Opengl Games that use alot glx (thats atleast true for quake3).
After few minutes playing, sometimes takes bit longer, X destroys. Symptom: Screen freezes and in 1 minute X restart, dumping me back to kdm.
No Freezes with smaller applications such as using MPlayer gl2 to watch videos thru the layer or playing Doom or old quake.
As sayed i dont know excatly what that quake3 uses but my bet is on the nvidia drivers having serious issues with new kernels. Or is it normal X to dump itself and restart :P.
Using ms windows for games is best at the moment and Linux as school studying but nvidia really should open the sourcecode to some individuals to look at these problems.
And this is not an answer either, but things that I know happen.
Everything works fine.
Kernel 2.4.19 (I should upgrade sometime, but I'm lazy)
3123 drivers
LFS 3.3
Crappy Biostar motherboard, KT333 chipset.
Athlon XP1800.
MSI GF4 Ti 4200
I do not have Quake 3, but 1 and 2 work just fine in GLX mode. UT (the original) works just fine as well, as does Rune (which uses the UT engine), Descent 3, RtCW, and the UT2k3 demo. These are all native.
Half-Life under Wine works as well -- except for the menus.
Additionally, Q1/Q2, UT, RtCW, Descent 3, and Half-Life all worked with driver 2960 on my older GF2 GTS 32MB card (came installed in the Dell POS system, so I don't know the vendor, just the chipset).
I'm currently using twm, but I had the same results with KDE and kwin.
vandrej -- What game are you running, and what message is it giving you? What card is this? What motherboard chipset? Which kernel version (uname -r)?

Did you turn on 3d Acceleration in your Graphics card and monitor section in YaST2?

Try to run the "3Ddiag" program, it is on your suse 8.1. It can help you
to check out what is wrong with your configuration.

I have the same problems with SuSE 8.1 and driver release 3123 (just tried the binary rpms).
Hardware: AthlonXP, VIA KT266, GeForce 2 MX 400, TV Card.
No log entries, I tried different agpart settings and mem=nopentium boot option, no improvement.
The system worked stable under SuSE 8.0 and 7.2 with earlier releases of the NVDIA driver, incl. 3d accel.
Frambuffer and nv X driver runs without problems.
Finally!
Something (I think) I can help with!
I saw exactly the behavior you describe in both Racer and TuxRacer. Try setting the default desktop color depth to 16 bits...
Issue is that most of these apps are 16-bit, and starting them from a (KDE?) 24-bit desktop gives you only a '3D functions not activated' or similar message, even when you do have the hardware acceleration turned on.
Try it!

After a complete new installation, now everything runs fine. During the installation the installler detcts the NVidia card and asks if it should prepare the installation for 3d accel. I thought this would invoke the online update and download the driver, so I clicked "No", to install the drivers later by hand, 'cause I already had the driver on a cdrom.
Now I treid "Yes", and nothing special happend --- I guess some entries in /dev are set up and get the right permissions. After a
#rpm -Uvh NVidia*
now everything runs stable and fine.
