Look at what my PC looked like after trying to install the nVIDIA GeForce 6800 Driver Version 71.84 :thumbdwn: :

http://www.pjci.net/prv/afterNVIDIA7184-driverUpdate.jpg

I tried twice with a clean install (Clicking the setup.exe prpgram in the install folder) and the automatic install (Using the 71.84_win2kxp_english.exe install program).

Both produced the same horrific results. Yes, I unistalled Version 66.93 before installing v71.84. I'm now going back to v66.93. I have no problems except for the usual banding elements, but these are solved by turning off all or most of the Advanced Driver Options Like AF and AA etc  :

Is anyone else having issues with the V71.84 drivers for the GF 6800?

heh . .that desktop looks fimiliar from when I tried the horrible 7x series drivers :p Let me guess... you have a VIA chipset? At least many (if not most) people with a VIA chipset get that horrid corruption of the desktop with the 7x series drivers. Way to go nvidia!

My BIOS Is Phoenix Tech. 3.03 2/9/2004
SMBIOS version 2.3

I'm not certain if this is the same, hwever my CPU to AGP is controlled by a VIA interface. Maybe someday, nVIDIA will post a solution. :afro:

AMD + Chaintech Nforce 3 150 - 71.84 = gaming goodness on my rig. The 71.84 driver is the worst nvidia driver I have ever used since I first got my geforce 4 ti 4600 years ago. The 67.66 driver is the best driver I've used since then, UT2004 bug aside. The 71.84 driver has a nasty Joint Operations bug, did pretty much the exact same bug in far cry and caused doom 3 to crash for the first time ever on my system after a few hours of playing. The 67.66 driver renders every game I have perfectly. I'm just going to have to wait for the next 7x.xx driver.

temp problem aside i think the 7184 is the best all round release since 6766/6976(can not make up my mind which i like best;))
while i am not familiar with the game you are playing or what it is supposed to look like, i must say those pix are pretty bad. is it an older game?

Leave it to VIA to screw up your day.... nForce/Intel > VIA > SiS

AMD = crap

AMD > Intel ;)

AMDs are pricey?... you seriously kidding when your comparing those to prices of Intel processors, it must be a typo or a joke! LOOOOL

Way to go VIA is more like it. It's not nVidia's fault VIA produce junk chipsets and drivers.

I'm afraid it's VIA who should be posting solutions, not nVidia, since this occurs only on VIA chipsets... Do your self a favor and purchase a motherboard with a real chipset on it.

a little harsh but got to agree. this has always been the weaknees for the amd platform imo. poor chipset design. intel holds much tighter reigns over qc for non intel chipset designs. which is why you have less problems like these on intel platforms.
hopefully nv wil come out with a fix soon as via does not seem to move to fast with problem fixing.

Way to go VIA is more like it. It's not nVidia's fault VIA produce junk chipsets and drivers. Id hardly say VIA is crap.. this is the first time ever that I have had a driver issue that seems to tie into VIA compatability. It's NOT VIA's responsibility to make sure NVIDIAS PRODUCTS AND DRIVERS work with its stuff... its NVIDIAS RESPONSIBILITY. VIA is the chipset on the motherboard ... there for is up to nvidia to make sure its drivers for its video cards are compatable with the most commonly used chipsets on motherboards. VIA is widly used... along with nforce.. intel... and other such chipsets. I dont think its QC of VIA... but QC of nvidias driver team that needs some retooling. :thumbdwn: I have nothing against nvidia ... great video card I have and love it.... and im using the XG modded 67.66a's and they work great (6x series works great for me). I just hope they fix this issue soon with the newer 7x drivers. :(

I get that same corruption w/all nvidia drivers if i overclock too much and the game locks up. Never had it on the desktop though. Maybe my power supply is not enough on the 12v rail stable to handle higher clocks I dont know. As its only reaching 60C at load at 350core 1200mem. BTW I'm on an nforce board.

I don't want to labor the VIA point too much more, but did it occur to some of you suggesting that the older drivers worked okay that nVidia is trying to take maximum advantage of the AGP bus with the latest few drivers? This is where VIA always falls over without fail generation after generation. Their AGP slot is only really reliable if it's being used like a glorified PCI slot.

Anyway four things you can try, the last one I don't know much about though.

1) Disable Fast-Writes (in the drivers and in BIOS (if possible))
2) set your AGP rate to 4x (in the drivers and your BIOS)
3) obtain PCI Latency Tool V2.3 and set your graphics card latency to 64 http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=951
4) Apparently there is a Hyperion driver set without an AGP driver present. Apparently Microsoft wrote an AGP driver for VIA and you are meant to use that. I have no idea where you obtain said driver. I recall seeing posts about it in this forum though.

my FX3 and VIA KT800 and Leadtek 6800 Ultra are running smooth as silk. I dunno where u get your misinformation from. Do not generalise from past performance dude ;)
Running the 4 in 1 and 71.84s as well
