Has anyone done benchmarks with a SLI setup with 2 6600 GT cards vs a single 6800GT..

I was primarily looking for 2 X 6600 GT cards vs one 6800 GT..

Putting together a system and its about the same price for 2 6600 GT series cards SLI than one big dog 6800GT

Wouldn't it be better to get a single GT since you always have room to put another one in the future, when they become cheaper and stuff.

to me this is the biggest advantage of sli right now. given bugs & other issues this gives you the best of both worlds - a single solution that can run anything out there & anything that is going to be released in the next year or so. & the upgrade path for when your gt gets a little long in the tooth & sli is more 'mature'.

I have owned both. Check my SLI investigations. They dont directly compare the cards but they do have some of the same benches. The 6800GT --> 6800GT SLI is probably a bit better value. 2 6600GTS is faster in shader intensive applications and games with AF but no AA. With Anti Aliasing the 6600GTS lose bandwith/framebuffer which causes them to slow. If you dont care about Anti Aliasing then 2 6600GTs is are almost always faster in AFR mode.

The 6800GT does have 256 Megs of memory. I'm not entirely sure how big of a deal this is going to be compared to 128 megs. It does show differences at high resolutions with AA/AF. Anyway. If you care about AA and high resolution. The 6800GT is "marginally" better. If you dont care about Anti Aliasing. The 6600Gts are faster. One thing is sure though. 2 6600GTs are cheaper than 1 6800GT right now in PCIE

Oh, a single 6800GT. I played on systems side by side with the same configs. The 6800GT was faster with AA/AF, not only that, not every game supports SLI so you would be stuck with a single 6600gt in some situations

I have, and posted them here:

IMO the difference in using the 2 on SLI supported games is 2X AA. Of course, on games that don't benefit from SLI the 6800GT is the better card to have.
