I have a Thermaltake case with a screen that tells me my CPU temp. I have an AMD Athlon 2800+ with a fan/heatsink that has support for up to a 3400+. It says my temp is 47.9 C and 118.8 F. It of course goes up and down, but I was wondering if that was normal.

Just so we know, is that an idle temp or a temp under load?

most ppl get about 30s c idle temp. though 50c idle is still within acceptable temps. temps can safely reach 80c before u should start worrying.

I have never had a barton idle in the 30's. Usually they are at about 40-45 and about 50-55 under load.
My FX-55 idles at 38c and I've never seen it go over 43c under a load. My sugguestion would be to record idle temps and then record temps under a full load (like with SiSoft burn in test).
My 3200+ idles at about 45' C.

I idle at ~36c but I can easily push it up to ~75c under 100% loads (which it is usually at day and night). Silly $4 aluminum heatsink and un-setable fan/sensor options in the bios. Anyway, I've been kicking it's butt for about a year and a half and it's still going.
my barton 3000+ idled at about 50c full load was somewhere in the low 60's
my 64 3500+ idles at 35c full load 45c
My 4000+ idles @54c & 61c under load using the stock HSF. i think i need a better cooling .
