I currently have a BFG 6800NU AGP card but want the best WMV-HD video playback possible. Since the 6800 GPUs don't decode WMVHD, would it be a good move if I traded somebody for a 6600GT card? I don't play a lot of games, only once in awhile.

Wait a couple months and there'll be a new top end card with functioning WMV decoder if the performance is a problem for you. If you're really set on full functional purevideo now, and don't play games all that much, then yeah, get a 6600GT - it's a good card by all accounts.

There's quite a few:

Friday Night Lights
Meet The Fockers
Ray
Alexander
Godsend
The Rules of Attraction
A number of documentaries
Amélie
Casino
Chicago
Dawn of the dead
Dune
Jean-Michel Jarre : Live in Beijing
The Punisher
Total recall
Standing in the Shadows of Motown
Terminator 2
Muffin Man
Lara Croft - Tomb Raider
Lara Croft - Tomb Raider 2
Bulletproof Monk
The Italian Job
Timeline
Gangs of New York
We Were Soldiers
Underworld: Extended Cut
The Hunted
Open Range
In Good Company (DivxHD)
Shark Tale (DivxHD)
White Noise (DivxHD)
Madagascar (DivxHD)

This is by no means a comprehensive list, I'm sure there are more. If anybody knows of others that are currently available or soon to be please feel free to add to the list.

Are they better quality than DVD or something? You could just watch DVDs and keep the 6800nu?

They are much better quality than normal DVD.

I have 3 WMVHD documentaries right now and all of them are in 1080p. They look absolutely gorgeous on my 24" LCD. The detail is amazing.

How do you buy those movies in that format? I've honestly never heard of it before. Is there another program one can use to play those types of movies? (Sorry to go OT)

Can a 6800GT play them in WM and if so, could I get a demo somewhere to compare?

Here's a link to one of them. You will need MS Media Player 9 or 10. These discs use DRM unfortunately but they are worth the trouble IMO.

Yeh, trading it for a 6600GT AGP would be a good idea. Performance difference isn't huge anyway.

Well he would be going down to a 128bit memory bus, but if your not playing games that much, go for it :)

I really don't understand whats the problem.

you can watch WMV-HD and HD-divx without the need for a dedicated video card.

Yes your CPU might be close to 90% utilization but so what? its not like you are going to play doom3 at the same time right?

I've seen several trailers in HD-divx and WMV-HD and they play excellent on my xp2600@2.2ghz and a FX 5900.

Besides you can't use post processing like ffdshow for example with hardware based decoding.

I want to be able to play the 1080p Alexander trailer without all the skipping and losing frames.

Can somebody with a 6600GT and PureVideo try playing this trailer and let me know what their CPU usage is?

You can play most, but sometimes the 1080p versions are troublesome. Check out some demos at http://www.wmvhd.com and http://www.divx.com/hd/

Let us know what you think.

The PCIE 6800NUs have the revised Pure Video, but there's no point in doing ANYTHING right now.

Until MS releases a .dll, there will be no WMV acceleration on any card. So you might as well stay put.

I went into a big Sony store in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago and they had some 1080p material playing on the new 60" Sony HD plasma panel.

To say the images were jaw-dropping would be a complete understatement. I sat on the couch infront of the TV for maybe 30 minutes, completely mesmerized.

I though that this update was the latest build of Windows Media Player 10? 3802? Is there another patch that we need?
