View Full Version : Lord of the Rings DVD
i got the dvd today! widescreen version :)
i really like it... one disc has the movie and the other is full of special features
at most stores, it is on sale for only $15.99 that's a steal!! go out and get your copy
in a couple of months the other dvd with the deleted scenes will come out.
i cant wait to get that one!

seems like a cynical way to capitalize on the film to me. first coming out with the movie with special features, then coming out with an even more expensive platinum edition later that has the deleted scenes

Yes, I agree... It is a lame marketing ploy. Which is why I refuse to buy the first disk even though I really would like to see it on DVD.

I thought the movie was ok...a little too long for not enough action..
should have been 2 hrs.
thats a great price on that dvd..i wonder what best buy is selling it for..

2 HOURS!?!??!? If it were that long the story would have been absolutely butchered. If anything it should have been longer!!!
I agree Starscream. That movie was actually covering two books.

Actually your right..The book was a great masterpiece..1000 pages..
I just think it didnt have enough action for 3 hrs.
sort of a drag to me.. :\
just an opinion though..

If anything there should be 6 3 hour movies.
But somehow I don't think that's realistic.

The movie definetely needs to be longer.. They butchered plenty of stuff as it was.
No Tom Bombadil?

I don't think excluding Tom was "butchering" the story. His character didn't really affect the main story at all (although that was a very fun and enjoyable section in the book), so I can see why that section was cut from the story. *spoiler alert* - However the barrow downs section immediatley afterward is very important, the sword Merry uses to kill the leader of the Nazgul in the third book was from there, and if it weren't that particular sword the Nazgul wouldn't have been killed (in the movie Aragorn simply gives Merry and the other Hobbits swords). What Peter Jackson chooses to do when they get to that part in the third movie is going to be interesting. *end spoilers*
One thing that I really missed was the gift giving scene, Galadriel gives all the members of the fellowship very special gifts. Some of which play very big parts later on. Thankfully that's supposed to be on of the new scenes in the extended version released on dvd in november.

definitely. even at 3 hours they left stuff out. it was still a damned good movie though.
in the special features of the current LotR: FotR DVD, Peter Jackson mentions how he doesnt believe in a "director's cut" but he wanted fans to have the full story it was meant to be (i guess because it wouldve been way too long on the big screen) so with the DVD release in a couple of months it will be sort of like a "director's cut" with the deleted scenes included
it'll be like watching a whole new movie! :)
and then a couple of months later we can watch the LotR: The Two Towers =D
i agree, i really would rather not dish out more money just for the deleted scenes which i think shouldve been added in with this current DVD release but the next DVD might come out on a huge sale too and i could go for that
best buy had for $15.99 this week but they may be all sold out of the widescreen version now

my complaint was that this "Platinum Edition" coming out in November has a MSRP of $39.99, compared to the movie out now which has a MSRP of $29.99. so yeah, there might be sales, but they will be in the neighborhood of $24.99.
asking people to buy two DVDs is just ridiculous. i'm not sure if this PE of the DVD has all the features that the DVD available now does. if it doesn't that is another black mark.

That's an example of how a 1000 pages can be butchered into 1.5 hours, so when I heard it was 3 hours, I was relieved. I'm still not sure why they went into stuff in the second book since they were going to have all three movies to get that stuff in. But, they will probably dwell more on the events of the last two books since they have more action, which makes for a better movie experience for those who haven't read the books.
I'm just glad I heard about the two different releases so I didn't waste my money twice for the same movie. I've done that twice already with Dogma and Tombstone.

i hear you exar, i was going to go buy the movie yesterday. i would have been extremely angry and disappointed to find out that version was not what i was looking for. luckily, i ended up being to lazy to go to the store and i stumbled upon this thread, or else i might have gone today :D

The new DVD coming out in November does not contain the theatrical cut. What if it is an Apocalyspe Now Redux, and the added scenes are crap? There will be no way you can watch the theatrical, except to shell out 20 bucks for the one that's out now.

i guess i have no choice but to take my chances, then. i usually like deleted scenes i see, and would rather have them included in the movie anyway, so i'm probably all right.

Yes, there is three parts to LOTR.
1) Fellowship of the Ring
2) The Two Towers
3) The Return of the King
The battles in parts 2 and 3 will SPECTACULAR.
as much as it's gonna hurt to wait, I'm waiting until all 3 movies are out. Then I'll buy the super-dooper with all the extras and gravy and have your cake and eat it too trilogy edition. :)
i really want this dvd ... but i refuse to buy it, then buy the one in november with the 30 extra minutes. i will rent it tho, but i'm not pleased with what they're doing, namely trying to get ppl to buy it twice. if i can find a used copy, tho ....
