View Full Version : Time to go to XP?
Under a post in general hardware, the Baron told me going up from Win98 to XP would be a good idea, speed up things. I get alot of crashes w/ 98, have long boot times, etc., and I wonder if this is a good idea. I had a messy, network sort of install for 98, and that is probably why its screwed up. Would upgrading to XP fix this? or would I need a fresh install?
98 is old, make a use out of your computer! I guarantee you WILL see a big difference. Doesn't have to be XP, Win2000 will do the job very well.

given that its Windows, fresh installs are always better.

I've used both 2000 and XP (currently using 2k), and I'm going back to XP this Christmas break. Once you turn off some of the annoying features in XP, it can be a great OS. I really loved the themes, as they gave a nice feel to the OS.
Plus, even though this contradicts what many people say, XP has been more stable for me than 2k.

I still get the feeling those who badmouth it either a. had it at launch or b. install beta drivers a lot.
I couldn't honestly say, but...

Hey! I install beta drivers all the time! It never crashes! It started locking up for a bit, but thats cuz I was an idiot and enabled spread spectrum thing in bios. LOL. Anyways, yeah, you're right.:D

If you have the rig in your sig, xp will run very well. You will like it, I am sure.
The good side about XP is that you don't have to install as many drivers as you would with win2000.
I'd recommend XP, but either would be good.

i had that problem before, but than i ran the set up or run a small home or office network on 3 of my computers and just made sure they were on the same domain, and it worked. even if you set them on the same domain and you don't run, set up or run a small home or office network, the computers won't network for some reason.

I 'm planning on going to XP Pro because of the fact that my current setup struggles w/ power management under 2k. It's a toss up really.

Your box should be able to handle XP good. I would recommend that you get XP Pro. If you plan on networking, you can only network up to 5 computers (If I remember PC World correctly) with XP Home. XP Pro is far superior and geared much more towards a power user/tech. But, if you upgrade critical parts (ie, motherboard) you have to call up M$ and get a new license number. But thats assuming you have a legit copy of it to begin with and dont have a keygen :)

actually i've gone back and forth w/ XP and 2k. Sad really, just can't stick w/ one.. it's hard because both has its strengths and drawbacks

I've fallen in love with XP all over again. 2k got this nasty bug with WMP where whenever a movie would get previewed, explorer would crash. Plus it was just butt ugly compared to what my freshly-skinned XP looks like.

Skinning is about the only thing I miss in Windows 2000. I've seen some rather cool stuff on you guys' desktops (http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=535&perpage=25) to make me envious... :p
I generally don't like XP for its intrusivity and ever-present guardrails which get in my way all the time (f.I. I was pretty dismayed not to find the NTFS security tab at first, before I realized what had to be done). I don't like M$ trying more and more to strip you out of control either. Oh, and can anyone explain me what's with the stupid dog assistant ?
I never gave it a fair chance to assess its performance/compatibility level, so I won't comment on that.
I kinda prefer the default Win2K look and color scheme compared to the default flashy GUI of XP also... :)

That's what drove me away from XP the first time was the dumbed-down part of it; but this time I took the time to remove all the extra stuff, so basically it's just Win2k with skins.

I just got XP Home (going from 2000) on my nForce
I think I'm in love.
Well, when first installed XP is tailored to "guide" you, but you can change most of that stuff, and the OS is every bit as configurable as 2k. XP is targeted at the whole gamut of users whereas 2k was targeted as people with at least some knowledge of computers. Performancewise, there's little to no difference(though 2k acts nicer on less beefier machines(ie you don't wanna run xp with less than 256 meg of ram)). I stick by my usual recommendation. If you don't own either 2k or XP, then buy XP...if you have 2k then you need to decide if the new features of XP are worth the upgrade to you. Lastly, so many people feel they need XP Pro, but 90% of the people could save 100 bucks and just go with home as they'll NEVER use any of the features that separate home and Pro.
XP is a load of CRAP cos NeorageX doen's run on XP :)
Seriosuly tho, XP isn't the demon some people would have you believe.
If you were to test 3dMark2k1, however, you'd probably find you get a bit lower score in XP than W2K tho (if that mattered at all to you). Least that's what I've found.
XP has nicer networking too I'd say (opinion)
