Whats an acceptable CPU temp for a AMD XP2100+ with a volcano 9?

I think that really depends on what you define as acceptable. If you mean "not-gonna-fry-it" acceptable, then up to 60 degrees celcius; but if you mean "nice-and-comfortable" acceptable, then usually anywhere from 35-45 degrees celcius.

It also depends on how you're running that Volcano 9. If you're running it in it's high-speed (read: wind-tunnel) mode, then temps should be at right around 40-45 degrees celcius (assuming you've got proper case ventillation that is).

Yup..

My processor is running @ 60c right now...I need a new case for better airflow and a killer fan on my xp1600..

I'm going with the thermalright sk800 and an 80mm vantec tornado....

With an HSF like that, I would be concerned if my temps got over 50 celsius on a regular basis. Your comfort zone, provided you have adequate air flow, should be in the 35-45 range as was suggested by netviper. My CPU idles at about 38-40 and hits a maximum of 46 under stress. To hedge my bets, I use CPUIdle when I'm not using my PC for strenuous activity and that lowers my temps to under 30. :D

heheh AMD's go to www.amd.com and check out the "SAFE OPERATING TEMPS"
They say from 3c-94c but i panic when my 2000+ gets obove 45c :$

Reading various forums you get the impression that sub-freezing CPU temperatures are the norm and any CPU above 40C is about to melt through your motherboard. In reality the CPUs are designed to be run with the crappy OEM cooler in a case that probably only has one fan in it (e.g. Dells and Compaqs).

Cooler is obviously better, but there is no magical number that when you go below suddenly gives you wonderful overclocking results and 100% stability. If your PC is stable, don't even worry about it unless you really want to overclock your CPU as much as you possible can.

Remember too that your motherboard doesn't give you an accurate temperature reading anyway. A lot of them use a thermister touching the bottom of the CPU, which doesn't give an accurate reading. Plus, many electronic components have quite a large error tolerance too. I trust my mobo to tell me that my CPU temp is "somewhere in the 40s" but I doubt its really accurate enough to know the difference between 44 and 45C. Such temperature measuring circuits rely on a consistant voltage too and I doubt anyone has a PSU that provides their motherboard with EXACTLY 12.0 volts.

I typically aim to keep things running at 40*C or lower...Once things start approaching 45* or higher, I know it's time to give some attention to better cooling...be it a new case fan, a faster fan for CPU cooler, or a new heatsink altogether...

I have a xp2000 with a ocz gladiator heatsink and a delta 38cfm fan. The onboard temp shows the idle temp at 46c and under load at 50c. Does that sound right. I slaped some more thermal paste on but that didn't help. Any ideas?

yeah depending on your room temps.. But normal thermal paste is crap .. need arcticsilver3

One simple question; is it stable??

Well I just happened to buy a xp2100+ and a volcano 9 and heres the results using the speed switch pot!
-Room temp is 20* c.
Fan at full speed (5400rpm) the chip is 34* c., cpu idol
36*c under load
at 2700 rpm the chip is38* c., cpu idol
42*c under load

Now with the stock cooler from amd here was my results...
42*c at idol
47*c at full load

These were just what I observed.
My case temp at idol is 34*c and at full boar is 38*c
My cpu is at stock speeds.
I hope this helps!

Then no need to worry about CPU temperature :)

Most people think that if it runs hotter then 40c its too hot and their CPU is going to explode!!!!

Remember OEM pc's ie Dell, Compaq pcs are designed to run with Pants coolers and they must run stable.

If it does start crashing then its probably related but as long as its stable don't worry about it

When I first installed my Athlon XP2700 the temp was 53 idle and 58, 59 under load. It was with a silent fan(25 dB) and not so big heatsink.
It was not perfectly stable then.

I replaced the heatsink and fan (40dB, Alpha) and itīs now at 41 idle and 46, 47 under load.
Stable and no problems at all.

Those temperatures are according to Asus PC-probe. Im certain that real cpu temps are higher because the MoBo cant measure the real cpu temp.

But I think anything under 50 C is OK.

Regards!
