and it looks a lot better than Doom 3, but at the same time: exactly like Doom 3.

Hm, looks worse than RoE to me.

I love the way it looks. It's getting pretty close to Quake 2.

The story info is supplied by Eric Biessman, the project lead for the game:

Earth is under siege by an alien race. The Strogg are cybernetic warriors--a mechanical frame and decaying body parts stabilized by flesh consumed in a systematic annihilation of other species and civilizations. In a desperate attempt to survive a Strogg attack on Earth, an armada of Earth's finest warriors is sent to take the battle to the Strogg home planet. Earth's initial assault force is nearly annihilated immediately, but one marine manages to infiltrate the base, bring down their planetary defense systems, and kill the Strogg's collective brain and leader--the Makron. Earth assumed the destruction of the Makron would end it all, but it didn't.

That's where Quake II leaves off and Quake 4 begins.

The Strogg are quickly regrouping. However, with the Strogg's planetary defenses still destroyed, Earth's forces can deliver a full and final assault. This time, you're not alone. You are Matthew Kane, an elite member of Rhino Squad, and part of Earth's next invasion wave. An army of soldiers are fighting with you and an arsenal of weapons and vehicles are at your disposal in this heroic and epic battle between worlds.

Quake 4 will be using the Doom 3 engine from id Software and will be showcased at E3 this May along with the id sponsored QuakeCon event in August. While the event will be free to attend, registration for QuakeCon has now begun at the event's official web site

Doom 4 = Quake 4?

Doom 4 = Quake 4?

Possibly, although I have to say I'm looking forward to this one more than I did D3. Raven tends to do a good job of focusing on "gameplay" not just graphics.

The background enviroment seems to be well within the Quake universe, but that monster just doesn't look good at all. I don't mean technically, but doesn't fit the Quake universe, looks like a second rate Far Cry enemy.

that monster just doesn't look good at all.

That looks like a lower class enemy soldier, like those footmen early on in Quake 2. If this is the case, it's looking damn good. The color and tone of the skin really does look like skin that has been on a dead body and harvested by the Strogg machinery. I'm not sure if I would be able to tolerate what other use of human flesh they will come up with.

I looks like Doom 3... Honestly, If I wasn't told it was Quake 4, It would pass as another Expansion for Doom. Shot already makes the game look like its going to be Dark, which Quake 2 wasn't...

Wha? Was I playing the same Q2 as you?
Cause the Q2 I played wasnt exactly a walk on the beach on a sunny day..

But hopefully there will be some more lighting in general then on that screenshot, and some bigger more open rooms would be neat, factory style stuff would be suitable..

Quake 2 wasn't pitch black, it had tons of lighting everywhere. Wasn't bright but you could see the map clearly, it used alot of colored lighting.

jolle

hehe well ofcource it wasnt pitch black, but saying it wasnt dark.. thats just not right man.. and colored lighting was the latest rage back then hehe..
Anyhow, Im hoping they light the maps up a bit more in Q4, as I understand it, its more of a direct action game, faster paced and such so it would make sense..

Anyone who says "well the game wasn't dark before" is crazy

Practically NO games that came out early ever used really dark atmospheres. Why? Because there practically was NO lighting in those games either. There were no real good shadows, lights never went out, they kept the whole thing lit up so everyone could see what they were doing. Maybe they originally wanted to make Quake 2 dark. Maybe the storyline fits better with dark. MAYBE the game won't even be that dark. Wait for it to come out before you judge how "copycat" or "unrealistic" and "not following the proper storyline" it will be

Damn, have you even played Quake 2? I distinctly remember at least one scene where all the lights in a warehouse went out one by one and left you in the dark, and then the room filled with enemies with only a few small lights to help you see them. There were a LOT of dark scenes in that game. The thing is, there were just as many (or more) bright scenes that took place in rooms with windows, or even outdoors with bright, sun-lit skies.

Funny, the SAME GOES FOR DOOM, yet they made it all indoors and all black.

Id say its a legitimate complaint. People want the game to look like Quake 4, not Doom3 2 (which didnt look like Doom either). If id wanted to avoid complaints like this, they would show a scene from Quake 4 that actually looked different than Doom 3 (ie, bright, probably outdoors). But they didnt, so either they didnt think about it, or they didnt have any bright scenes to show off.

I wouldnt argue the outdoors being all that much brighter then those in D3.
http://www.gamershell.com/pc/quake_2/screenshots.html?id=3
On the other hand they dont have the same dark shadows that D3 does, and the outdoors was a bit more frequent in Q2, hopefully it will be in Q4 aswell.

Unreal was very dark. In fact, part of the game was collecting flares so you could use them to see. One of my favorite gaming moments was going down the dimly lit corridor and the lights going out one by one until it was pitch black. Then one of the creatures attacks.
