I got my hands on a prescott version of what i had was a 3.Ghz Northwood 800FSB. This chip has 1 mb cache which i like.

this prescott runs hotter than the northwood by 5 to 8 degrees max 122 idle 105 themps. Also does this chip run any faster than the Northwood.

Gee, way to avoid the reviews there.

Yes, they run hotter than Northwood, 5-8 degrees isn't as bad as what the early revisions were bringing though (up to 20C higher). For gaming, Prescotts perform worse than Northwoods at any speed below around 3.8-4.0GHz due to the 11 extra stages in the pipeline. There are also various other reasons for the decrease in speed.

You should have at least read some reviews or asked here before buying. I would say that unless you are into extreme-ish overclocking that you were better off with your northwood. Get it back if possible and sell the presscott. ;\

5-8 degrees! It actually should be more than that :D

Yes it is going to run hotter, considering that a 3.0c Northwood utilizes about 83w. of power whereas the Presscot runs at about 110w! Return that chip and stick with the 3.0c my friend :)

The prescott was sort of a disappointment when it came out for the afore mentioned reasons. Hot and didn't perform as well clock/clock as northwood.

Sounds like this processor sucks ass. thats all their is know on the shevles at computer stores even the 3.4p4's.

Well it sucks ass below 3.6Ghz but 3.8+ its decent, just costly.

Well, there's also this dirty thing called Athlon 64. But don't cosider one of those, they're not intel so the evil spirits will infest your PC and make it a pawn in terrorist schemes. :bleh:

I ran some tests with this prescott over what i had from my past scores i kept and the prescott runs just a little faster by only like 2to3 points faster but i seen load temps and their at least 10 to 15 degrees hotter than before i don't know if that would be unstable but i do get good stability.

Run some gaming bencharks, assuming you game. Preferrably bot matches etc which stress the CPU.

meh the prescott has more L2 cache, but the cache is actually rated at a slower speed! Thats partly why it doesn't perform too well.

I went with the latest of the 478 chips the 3.4 and it runs hot i mean 118F Idle and 130F max wow thats hot. i don't if thats normal for the 3.4 p4 but im looking for better cooling

Suggestion 1: Sell this hot bugger and get an A64.
Suggestion 2: OC it to at least 3.8ghz to get some performance out of that CPU.

Ah, another HOT post.
STALE
btw, mi 2.8e prescott ran at 65*C on load, n friends 2.8c ran at 49*C load. so u get a ruff idea how hot is it

Thats very hot mine doesn't run that hot but close enough.

Any suggetions as to what is a good copper heatsink and fan for the P4 3.4? and does artic silver help in this issue?

cheers guys.

AS5 will definetely help, but only by about 3-4 degrees C. As for a heatsink, if you want the best, get a Thermalright XP120. With a 120mm fan.

Main reason why the Preschot performs so poorly compared with the Northwoods is the extra 11 pipelines added to it. I'm still amazed that Intel managed to avoid another Wiliamete.

lol, i actually fell for the-new-P4-is-all-that crap and got a 1.6GHz P4. Little did I know that my old P3 933 would still beat it into the ground. That was the worst loss i have suffered with computer hardware; an upgrade that was really a downgrade. I have never even considered another P4 since then.

For the heat issues..nothing a Thermalright XP90 or 120 cant take care of:)

Same here. I had one for 3 years. It's why I mentioned it. :D

Every time I see this thread, I'm reminded of the Family Guy episode were Peter and Lois go to KISS fest and Lois embarasses peter.

Later, at Denny's, they run into KISS and the one member (no idea who) says, "My Grand Slam was supposed to come with sausage."

It was a totally off-the-cuff and just retarded comment to make.
