The other day it was scortching in my bedroom and I kept getting lockups in HL2 from overheating. I solved the problem by lowering my core to 300 and memory to 900 mhz. From what I could tell there wasn't any noticeable decrease in performance. Only once did my fps drop to a relatively low level and even that was at least 40. This brings me to wonder are the high clock speeds of today's cards namely our 6800GTs and Ultras even necessary? Also, how low could you go before noticing any real life performance loss? I know benches suffer a lot but I'm wondering if I should just play HL2 with my card underclocked by 25-50 mhz all the time. Maybe it's just HL2 that isn't picky...

Or maybe you need to move your case in your room. Or maybe your current cooling setup sucks.

Nothing. I can't go lower than 350/500. Weird.

what? no. I noticed quite a significant difference between 350/1000 and 400/1100 ... by at least 15 FPS (or more in some cases) and benchmarks too.

Well I know my cooling is subpar but 95% of the time it's fine. I was asking this question more so for mere discussion purposes.

A 15 fps loss isn't huge if you are usually averaging close to 100. I thought the human eye wasn't capable of noticing anything above 40 or something like that?

I feel your pain from overheating temps in your room. My room in the summer becomes hot as hell because my house was built in the mid-40s and there is no AC or insulated walls, so the heat from outside just bleeds through :( I remember trying to play FarCry in the summer and it would lock up, so I would just drop my speeds to about 375/1ghz and it would run fine after that
