G70 to require more power ??

http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=22917

bring on your 600W PSUs :p

Well if that all turns out to be true, looks like I won't be getting a G70 :thumbdwn: Too ludicrous, too much heat in the box, too much noise cooling that.

conservative estimates imo. remember 480watt for 6800 ultra?

this artical makes no sence what so ever.... then again its the inq. look why would nvidia goto the pci sig and ask for a change in power out put after millions of pci-e chip set have already been sent out....

PCIe V. 2.0 ? (or whatever the next version will be)

Planning ahead for the future. Maybe it's G80 that needs that much power?

Assuming that G70 and G80 aren't two parts of the next gen: Chip 1 and 2.

What would Nvida have done with their G70 so that it needs so much power? Well, Inq. doesn't stop talking bull****.

Still dont believe it ??
well heres another proof that the G70 will be power hungry :p

That PSU costs more than my system, 450+ dollars, I do like the warranty of 5 years, but it has 4 12 volt rails and might not work well with some boards. I do think your right in that the next cards might very well have two cores, or GPU's on one board, that would explain all the power requirements.

Saying that I do believe that this PSU would be great for any dual Intel solution, as they would be the ones who need it the most. Those smithfield dual core chips eat the watts.

It may be power hungry but not in the dimensions Inq. is talking about. But 2 G70 in SLI...That should kill many power supplies.

Errmm...And why do you all think, the R520 doesn't need a lot of power? Remember Inq: 'The R520 is their NV30 and they know it'.

well the x850xt pe has about 10 less watts under windows usage and 20 more watts under full usage over the 6800 ultra, so I don't see why everyone is worried that the g70 is going to be a huge power hunger card.

So all those people pissed off and crying out that ATi uses less power shut up lol j/k

nvidia is not even using low k yet either and that inceases efficency by 25-30% for ATi cards well doesn't look like ATi's architecture is that efficient when it comes to power usage..... because they have to clock it higher to keep up

WE HEARD THAT Nvidia asked PCI-Sig, the PCI and PCIe standardisation body, to provide some more juice for Nvidia's next generation cards. It turns out that 75W from external connector and 75W from motherboard is not enough. Nvidia wants an additional 75W for its G70 card.

This is something that was whispered at the WinHEC conference held this week in Seattle. When we dug a little bit more it turns out that there is such a proposal at PCI-Sig website. You can see it here and download it if you have a user name and password.

We also heard that Nvidia asked PCI-Sig to let it use two power connectors for the card, each providing 75W of power. If the Sig agrees, it seems that Nvidia next generation card might end up drying 225W of power. It's simple maths, 75 W from PCIe motherboard connector, and two times 75 from a six pin power connector.

It turns out that G70 might be one very power hungry card after all. Knowing Nvidia's troubles with its early jump to 130 nm I would suggest that this chip won't be 90 nm like ATI's R520 "Fudo". It has to be either 110 or 130, we suggest, as we don’t see Nvidia risking its NV30 failure one more time.

Whatever happens, this card is an autumn marchitecture and even if Nvidia announces it before then, I don’t think you will be able to get one until then. µ

This might be why everyone is worried. ;)

Its all bs, the g70 will work fine with a good 350 or 400 watt power supply just like the 6800's. Under full tilt, the 6800 ultra is using 271 and SLI is using 365 (the 6800 ultra is using around 90 watts of power), there is no way the g70 with a smaller micron process will more then double the consumption. Actaully thats like 3 times the amount of energy it would be pulling. If the g70 has 32 full pipelines then I would expect it to use something like under 180 watts total, around 150 watts. Then add that to the system, nvidia is being on the safe side probably for future generation cards, if what inquirer really heard is true.

Its kinda like the 6800 ultra with the extra second power connector, which it really doesn't need.....

Wait for computex, probably all our doubts will fade away.

Forceware 72.03 dated 25th of April has lots of G70 entries, so I believe we'll see next gen gpu very soon.
I don't understand why they need so much power, 6800 Ultra Go has a very low power consumption (since it's mobile) and performs the same as a desktop 6800GT.

I read some reviews that placed the 12 pipe mobile 6800u between the desktop 6800gt and 6800ultra.
