I don't understand why it's preloading factions. It would make sense to do so if I put in a preorder key or something, but I haven't. So, if I was not going to play the beta event on the 24th nor buy Factions when it is released, I'd have all this extra HDD space taken up for nothing?

That's just bad form.

Just guessing here.I have read somewhere that you can still continue to play original guildwars without buying Factions but people who have installed both might grow stronger than you because of the new gears they are likely to get from Cantha world. This would only make sense if they can bring those gears back to Tyria, so updates might have something to do with situations where you need to see Cantha related objects/skills on your Tyria only client.

I know something like this happened/is going to happen in CoH/CoV too, when player controlled heroes and villains meet.

Bingo.

Everyone needs to preload factions, because even if you don't play the factions campaign, people from the factions side of things will still be in the original game aswell, and you need that content supported.

Gak! Guild Wars came down hard today. There was a glitch in a server that caused all traders to sell products at unrealistically low prices. It caused them to have to reset all servers back to a state before the problem occured. The game is down now and will be for a few more hours :(

Quite tragic indeed, but for the good of the game. Without the revert the economy ltierally would have been destroyed for some time.

So how is the upgrade to the sound engine treating everyone, now that we have hardware acceleration and somehwhat of a level of detail? So far I am pretty happy and it seems my framerate has smoothed out when new sound sets/areas load where as previously this would cause a minor hiccup in some zones.

my famerate seems a little better after the update but I haven't done any actual testing. FYI if you have a decent sound card like an A2ZS or higher turn up the sound quality meter under options all the way else you are missing out on a lot of the sound detail you were getting before the update even in software mode.

Got my Factions pre-order disk yesterday, nothing earth shattering but nice to have. Looking very forward to this expansion.

Factions Preview event is on and guess what? They updated the graphics engine to use DirectX 9. Performance seems to be up in the original part of the game and apparently the new part will have better graphics now if your card supports it.

My first impression of Faction is that it kicks major butt. I'm actually excited about playing with my guildies again. I WAS very concerned, but after having the Birdman in my party, my fears have been settled. :D

Yea, I read somewhere they added a bunch of new shaders and if they detect a card that can support they crank them on. This is going to be a nice upgrade in both content, depth and technology.

I tried the new area today and my options showed DX9 but the game looks the same to me. Maybe they are waiting for the offical release date for the improved visuals but I don't think they are going to change anything.

I logged in BRIEFLY this morning before leaving for work, and I didn't really notice anything different, but then again: I thought this game was absolutely gorgeous to begin with.

Well, you would be wrong. but that said, new shaders don't really equate to a visual overhaul, more likely some new spell and enviromental effects, so I doubt it will be anything terribly obvious/major. They are adding some effects, I have read it twice in two interviews with the devs, but sadly I am at work and can't dig up the link, I'll look this evening.

^ I already asked this in a GW thread in the main MMORPG forum but since shaders are being discussed, do I need the Factions preview to have Dx9 graphics or is Dx9 now in the main Guild Wars levels? I don't have the preview and I can't tell for certain if the existing GW game looks better, it seems like the surfaces look nicer but that may be from the update of 2 weeks ago and not directly from any effects of the preview which is around 5 days old now.

oh duh, EDIT - it says in my advanced graphics the renderer is Dx9. And again I don't have the preview, but I'm glad it at least says Dx9 now.

It likely won't make any difference in the current Prophecies campaign, I think all the new material is slated for the expansion only. That said, I and a couple other people have found performance a little smoother after they upgraded the rendering engine.

I fiind it very encouraging that they have applied pretty nice upgrades to the sound and video engine in the last few weeks.

I love this company because they do so much for the community for free. I'm really looking forward to Factions, but I'm afraid that I'm not going to have time with Oblivion. Not right now at least.

raystones, make sure that your video options have "post process effects" on. This makes a big difference visually (especially at high resolutions sp.?)

Ahhhhh, wait, I understand where you are coming from...you don't know if this only has an effect on the character selection screen...or the whole game, right? I'm not sure either. I had assumed it was the whole game because that option sure did make the character selection screen much better. Or, am I talking out of my ass?

edit - just realised that you guys are talking about dx9 shader capabilities. I'm wondering, then, what the "post process effects" option is for then?

Post processing turns on the bloom effect and a fog like effect in some places. It was there since the game first came out though it was bugged on nV cards at first but its fixed now and looks beautiful.

Why is that? Is it affecting PvP or PvE?

Thanks, I hadn't played in a while. When I popped in the game the other day I noticed this option and enabled it. I couldn't believe how much nicer everything looked.
