For those of you that may not know, I thought I'd kindly inform the community that the GeForce 6800 512MB cards are starting to ship at the end of this week at various online stores. BFG and LeadTek are selling them right now and I do not know what other companies are selling at the moment. Price range is anywhere from $799-$999 depending on the stores. I'll be getting mine for about $819.

Cheers :D

ROFL ... for an extra 256mb of memory you will never use for awhile that sure is a bunch of money for nothing :p Id say wait a year on a video card with 512mb... by then the price will be at least half way decent and worth while :) 256mb is more than enough for now! :D

$999   You could easily get 2 regular 6800 ultra's for that price and SLI them. Like Superklye said, that's ridonkulous.

If you look at the initial poster's location, he is a canuklehead. $819 is probably in CAD, making it about $650 US. Still not cheap, but not as expensive as a 6800U SLI setup.

Still not cheap, but not as expensive as a 6800U SLI setup.True. But nowhere near as fast. I remember when the 8500s started shipping with 128MB, and it did nothing but drain the wallet.

We are definitely not done with 256, though more is certainly welcome, if the price is right. I run Doom 3 butter smooth at 1280x1024, 2xAA and Ultra quality. I don't know how I get away with it, but I certainly do.

By the time we need a larger frame buffer, there will be a brand new graphics chip to go with it.

Watch your HD activity light while playing Doom3 on ultra... Its probably flashing everytime you enter a new room. Reason is you ran out of texture memory.

512mb memory will definetley help in Doom3 as well as EQ2

Ah, I missed that. In that case, that's actually a pretty good price. (the $819). Up until a few months ago, it was hard to find a 256MB 6800 ultra for under $800. Then throw 14% tax on that and you're set (for BC anyways, saskatchewan I think only has 7%?). Ahh, good times being a canuklhead.

Sorry, it's in USD, not CAD. I'll be doing some tests and benchmarking once I get a hold of the card and see if it really is worth is. Maybe within the next five months, this card will be the one to buy and maybe not now. No intention of having people go after them right away. I'm rather saying so that those that wish to try them, like myself (I do this for others, not for myself) to see if it will benefit others that are considering them. Yes I do agree with the 256MB version and you can get two for $700 for SLI setup. I'd just like to see whether this card is any better or not. All depends on the system I guess. Just my opinions. :D

Cheers

If you do get them before I do, you won't mind posting how well it performs eh? Looks like I might be getting the card for $650 USD now. Some places more expensive, other places cheap. Depends on where you get them from. LOL :D

Actually, it just does it when a little after I load a level. I don't know what's up, but it may have to do with the 71.89s and my system.

Last month, I didn't run Ultra because the hitching was more than I could bear for the minimal IQ increase, but now it's great.

I disagree. It's plain stupid IMO. It's as much needed as a 256mb GF 6200.

Im sorry to say if NVIDIA’s next gen cards ultras come with 512MB and cost this much they will be digging there own grave with the ultra series, I mean who would pay this much for 256MB's more when almost all the games still only need 128 or 64.

WTF are you talking about 128 and 64? Every single game I play currently uses over 128mb of texture memory no sweat...

I would hang myself If I had to use a 64mb vid card.

Hope you like your card when you get it. I would definitely be interested to see some benchmarks. I bet you will see a difference at really high resolutions and AA AF settings. You still are going to be held back though because you arent going to have any faster core then the rest of the people with 256mb. Sometimes companies actually run the memory timings slower on cards with more memory. Is this the case with this card?
