I think this is a great idea. It reminds me of those scenes from "Super Size Me" which show the "nutritional" nature of school lunches. This is a big step against the soft drink makers as well, since many of them have contracts with school systems and universities.

The only issue I have with doing things like this is how significant of an economic impact it will have on schools. Some schools, like my former high school, rely very heavily on revenue from partnerships with snack and soft drink companies, and when junk food is banned they lose those contracts.

Not that I oppose removal of the junk, because I think junk food in schools is begging for kids to be obese, but they do need to take steps to alleviate any financial concerns that come about as a result of this legislation.

One thing I would have to say about this, from my own experience back when I was in high school, the food they served in the cafeteria was junk food, even if it didn't fit the same description. I would definitenly not have considered some of it fit to eat...

We had, lets see:

- The greasiest pizza you can imagine. I mean, the stuff was litterly dripping with it. If you put a paper towel under it, the towel would probably be soaked with the stuff...

So it didn't sell well, so they re-served it the next day. 3 or 4 days of straight re-heating it, it didn't even look like pizza anymore, and no one would buy it. But they tried...

- I'm sure everyone has heard of mystery meat before, so no use in mentioning that. I have seen mystery salad bar however  Lets just say that one day I went to put what looked like katchup on my hamburger. Lets just say it didn't taste like katchup :barf:

- Pasta with a little red water...

Still on that greasy pizza, if one were to count calories and grams of fat, I wonder if it might have come out having 2x the amount of fat in a big mac?

Ah the cafeteria, such memories. We had Taco Bell and Pizza Hut for sale as well as the usual packaged lunches from the state of CA. You can imagine which was more popular ofcourse. ;)

It was a mistake to get the school's in bed with Pepsico in the first place. What will it take now to make up for the lost revenue, a tax increase?

Good idea. I rarely ate in the cafeteria in high school. We had an open campus, so we (friends and I) always went somewhere for lunch.
