Well, tomorrow is going to be a glorious day . . . . the release of Mac OSX 10.4 aka Tiger! Tiger has some sweet new features and I'm all ready for it (so is my super cool iBook!). And even though me and oldsk00l are the only ones hyped up, we have a little something to celebrate!

Wanna check out some of the new features? Check out Apple.com (http://www.apple.com/macosx). Also there is a review for the new OS release at Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10.4.ars). It's a nice 21 pager and a good read!

w00t! OMG TEH TIG3R IS C0MING!!! :D  :jumping: :headbang: :nana:

We have a few lads at my website who are well into i products and they are probably gonna have a review for it out soon to complement the others out there.

I have a feeling that Anand is probably gonna do a quick jobbie with his review to give an idea of the product and features.

maybe mini review vs .3?

Sure why the heck not. I guess I'll have to come at the angle of being a PC user for 19+ years going head first into the Apple world. I've really only had a month's experience with 10.3 so it might not be much of a review. I'll give it my best though.

Maybe not necessarily just 10.4, but maybe the whole experience of the transition to the Mac. I really want an iBook or something to play with the OS, but as a PC user I would have a very hard time letting go. That's why I would very much value an overall picture of what it was like to dabble in this other part of personal computing.

I guess my post was too vague. Tiger Direct is suing Apple for infringement of trademarks.

TigerDirect, which owns trademarks on the names Tiger, TigerDirect and TigerSoftware, has requested an injunction that could prevent Friday's launch of the Tiger OS. Tiger Direct is also seeking damages and legal fees.

it MAY NOT come out at all tomorrow!!!! They seek an injunction to stop 10.4 from being distributed.

I pre-ordered my copy of Tiger. It shipped sometime last night.

Wow that article on Ars is HUUGE. Must read through it all...

To be fair, i really dont feel a powerbook can give a decent pc vs mac comparison. It may cost as much as a high end laptop, but its very dated. Espically for 'Tiger' witch needs a 9600+ to actually utilize its hardware new nifty hardware acclerated stuff.

Honestly go for a powerbook or a powermac

Most definitly. A few things that really got me to looking into a Mac were the ease of use, graphical power, compatibility with Windows networks and etc and my favorite reason . . . it was something different than the ol Windows. A lot of people have asked me if making the transition has been hard to get used to and whatnot. I tell them straight up "No". Of course your little "X" to close a window is on the opposite side and all but overall, I find Mac OS X just more simple to use. If you are looking at a desktop or something, talk to oldsk00l. He has a pretty sweet rig of his own.

Trust me, once you actually see (for yourself) how well an Apple computer "fits" into whatever you're doing (web surfing, photoshop, music, video, etc) and see what all it has to offer, you'll love it.

The iBook is a great machine; I love mine. It's no Power Mac by no means but it gets me to where I'm going. The Mac Mini does fairly well too (speed wise, I guess), especially dabbling into the Mac realm.

I'll post a little review plus my "transition" as well soon . . . Keep on the lookout for it.

/me arrived home today, /me saw fedex package on table

/me opened fedex table

/me is now running Tiger, w3wt!!!

Toolbars are merged with the rest of the window for all the non-metal apps, and I think it's kind of ghey. The new apple menu icon SUCKS, but man spotlight is awesome.

I have a word document where I have the sentence "To which Shelley, got surprised and was thrown back"

I type in "To", and as I complete those letters in the search pane every document/file/picture that has or is associated with "To" in it instantly comes up as search results, as I type "which" same thing, then "Shelley" and then it narrows down to about 4 word documents, then as I further type the sentence it narrowed it down to that specific word file.

Too cool, clicking on the file in the search pane naturally launches the associated app. As far as ui "speed" goes, I installed it on my 2.5GHz system (dually). There was no real ui differences other than the ghey toolbar thing, and no speed difference.

In fact, other than spotlight and dashboard, it felt VERY similar to Panther. Great features though, and I have about 6 dashboard widgets setup. It's a total konfabulator rip off, but still "built-in" and quite nice.

Nice, hope joO n-joy your new toys.

I really want to know how the 2d feels on your g5 machine. maybe compare to the software emulated mini if you got a copy for that yet.

Honestly, I don't "feel" the improvement. You can tell that core image is teh r0xX0rz when you turn dashboard on, and move widgets in (awesome ripple effects).

However, for kicks I tried to see what would happen if I go to max resolution (2560x1600) and open about 20 windows, expose has a heart attack and your machine locks up for about 5 seconds. I was highly surprised and I wonder if it's just because it's a "new" thing for a driver to be sent window drawing information. The 6800u happily chews through everything until this happens, and I don't know if it's because the VRAM gets utilized a lot more.

Window resizing appears PERHAPS a bit faster, but it's subjective, I don't know how to measure that.

I'll have to do some testing on my iBook tonight and that way, we'll have a comparison between two different machines. I've seen some people say there is a big improvement and then again I've heard people say what you do. I get my free copy tonight at 6 PM and I'll try to post a little somethin somethin for you guys.

Well, just in case anyone gives a crap (I do), I downloaded Quicktime 7 just to try it out. Now remember, I have an 14" iBook, 768 MB RAM, and 1.33 GHz G4 CPU. I tried to run one of the "HD Movie Trailors" on the QuickTime website and I can't. I guess I should have heeded the "Needs a G5" warning huh?

What's the minimum hardware specs for running Tiger? RAM/CPU/HD space. I heard that this release stops supporting G3s, but I can't recall where.

Eh? My quesiton is, why woudlnt you be at your max resolution? And i have to say that is dissapoinng that macs cant handle 2560x1600 with expose, your 6800 ultra DDL isnt a slouch of a card. This is defiantly intresting. How was expose with .3 same setup?
