Never forget how much everyone thought the 6800 would need, and eventually people realized that it didn't require that 500W power supply, it sometimes required only 300W or 400W

Nvidia will always lean on the safe side and assume that you need a lot of power

Yeah, it seems like the same thing all over again.

I was thinking about it, and I think that id software is going to have a Direct3D powered engine on their next major title.

Cuz, well, I was thinking and all, yeah they're definitely going that route

Just a guess here but…

7800GT –AGP
7800GTX - PCI-Express
;)

more like

7800 GTX - PCI-Express
7800 GT - PCI-Express
7800 - PCI-Express/AGP 8X

ill be skipping this generation, 2006 is year of the upgrades for me.

ill have a PCIe mobo then and maybe a G80....??? if they call it that.

I feel like skipping till next year too. A 6800GT/Athlon 64 3500 should run everything nicely for the remainder of the year. I suspect there are many changes coming to PCIE as well. May as well wait a bit and see how this next gen of video cards changes everything.

It might even be time to give the console world a try. :)

Dual core CPUs are supposed to come down in price next year. I'll probably hold off on going DC until you can get a 2.6GHz model at a good price. So probably well into 2006.

Mmm that sounds great, im eyeing the 2.4ghz 1mb l2

Haha this thread is even more idiotic now that it seems the GTX will eat less power than an Ultra [400 vs 480 rec specs].

I want an increase in clock speed before I bother to go there though. That way applications that don't take advantage of the second core will still get a bit of a boost.

It would still be handy to be able to keep folding work units while playing CS:S though. Just not sure it's worth the expenditure ATM given the sky high prices of the 4800+ X2.

PCI Express version 2.0 is coming out soon.

What it means for us?

Any PCI Express card running now you can use with a new PCI Express ver 2.0 but not vice versa. Basically, if NV70 ends up requiring the PCI Express ver 2.0 your current PCI Express motheboard is good as AGP version.

So, NVIDIA might make three versions of high end G70 with different clock speeds (power requirements) so it satisfies AGP, PCI Express ver 1.0, and PCI Express ver 2.0 architecture, or AGP version might have more power molex than its counter PCI Express version 1 or 2.

Personally i would wait for any upgrade till Longhorn, because there will be a lot of changes in meantime.

Exactly what im doing and fine advice to any PC owner who wonders what to buy and when.

The only safe upgrades IMHO are Monitors and external devices.

Bring on LH and the end of 2006

yup. well said. the dual core cpu's and nvidia's and ait's next step dont look to be anything gut-wrenching. my face melted when i saw the jump from a 9800 pro to my 6800gt. after i cleaned up the mess, i recently noticed the specs leaked of the new cards. sure they are better, but they arent a huge jump from my beloved card i have now. and i love my winchester 3500.

Exactly. But what happens when you need the power to run games natively on the new high end 2560x1600 or 3840x2400 monitor? :D This is where the performance delta becomes somewhat significant.

Wow, another good reason to buy a next gen console. I'd have to buy another motherboard just to upgrade to the next gen video card! F that.

Could be due to the performance SLi has delivered. Doubt we are going to ever see a single card solution deliver a performance jump like the past.

im not even going to worry bout it untill we see some real world reports ! they can say whatever they want ... remember the FX was spose to be the be all to end all.

They say this with EVERY new Gen card. :p

Maybe the "high end" offering would be PCI-e only but this is logical.

Considering the widespread diffusion of AGP boards I wouldn't be too much worried, though. If the "GeForce 7800 Ultra Extreme (press only) edition" won't debut in the AGP market, still some flavour of GeForce7800 that will do.

I don't think PCI-E 2.0 will be required to run G70-based cards. There are so many people who have invested into PCI-e 1.0 (or whatever the present NF4 mother board uses) who don't want to invest in a new mobo for newer technology. Why would the PC industry want to force people to invest in PCI-E 2.0 so soon?

I do realise that I could be wrong, though.
