In a firefox thread a little while ago I mentioned that the smilies would no longer work on my system with anything over firefox 1.0, and in general some animated gifs wouldnt work either.

I let it be since it seemed it was a problem with the new builds, but just today I used IE (havent used it for quite a while) and smilies/ gifs also do not work.
no animation whatsover. I updated macromedia flash, shockwave, java and still neither program is able to display animations correctly, as least where gifs and smilies are concerned, everything else seems to be working just as it should.

Is there something bigger going on? perhaps a virus or some missing file? I've been meaning to reformat and this is tipping me in that direction, is there an easier fix or should I go for it?

Thanks in advance.

Just do a reformat... trying to figure out the problem will take longer than a clean install

I also have had this problem occur to me on may occasions with Firefox. The only thing that seems to fix this is to create a new profile for Firefox itself. Never had this problem with IE though.

i actually figured it out, the problem was Zonealarm. after I updated it defaulted to very different settings, after I dug around a bit it came to me, and I got it to work. its funny but the simplest answers just never come till you exhaust all the hard options.
