Looks like we wont get it until late 06 early 07.

Many Milestones To Go
The finished product is still well over a year away (there are 13 "milestones" in the creation process, and we're visiting just after the completion of No. 3), but that suits everyone at Epic just fine. Long before the entire game world gets prettied up, Steve and company plan to have put together a gameplay framework that's tweaked to within an inch of perfection.

"We want to have all [the parts of this game] working for probably about a year before we ship. I think a big part of the success of Unreal Tournament will be that we've had such a long cycle of playing the game and improving it based on the idea, 'This is fun, but it would be more fun if' and then really refining it -- tweaking weapon balance, tweaking movement, tweaking vehicles, tweaking gameplay mechanics," Steve says. "We have to have a lot of time where we really playtest it and try all the different kinds of things you can do."

"That's the thing with the level shells -- we can play through and make tweaks while it's cheap, before there's pretty stuff splashed all over the concepts," Jeff notes. "We already have everything this game will have in terms of movement, weapon selection, range of motion, things you can do -- everything is already there." Everything but the visuals, that is. But, according to the team, the A.I. and the gameplay are already better than UT2K4's -- and most other things currently out.

"Our goal is to make a much better UT than anything anyone's ever seen," Steve says. Cement blocks notwithstanding, we're on board with that

Development still has a year and they want everything working for a year before they ship, look at the screens tho... You can find a link to the rest of the article here:

Bot AI is awesome as is. I can't wait to see the improvements. They can take their time and make a kickass product.

Bleh... the ground textures in that last screen are pretty bad. They made them grainy but they look flatter than Doom textures.

Anyone else notice that?

I think a 6800 Ultra will still be plenty when this game is released. Now my 9800 Pro is another story.

Nice screenshots & all , but the main question is how well it will look among the other games when it comes out on 2006/07 :eek2:

I really doubt it.. it was chugging pretty badly with SLI cards on some more complex maps... Of course it still has some optimizing to do, but I think they are shooting for 512mb cards with high res textures.

Thank God I'll have graduated and will have money for an SLi G70 setup as well as a dualcore Athlon 64 and the PhysX card by the time this game comes out.

Mmmm...it's gonna be a good upgrade

I really don't wanna have to upgrade just for this! I've spent almost $1500 in the past year and a half upgrading to what I have now and I don't wanna spend anymore money on good hardware that is going to run a crappy blue screen :D.

Hopefully I can squeak by on my current system with Quake4... I'm hoping for the next big upgrade in another year when games based on this engine should hopefully be surfacing..

Well, you don't have to upgrade until 2007 :) Which is when this game will be released... or you could just by a next-gen console for alot less than what you would have to pay for upgrading you pc!

I'm hoping I will be satisfied to just buy a next gen console instead of SLI or something like that (overkill IMO).

I hate how people think that it'll take a monster machine to run these games, then everyone complains about how consoles will make life easier, you don't have to upgrade just buy a console etc., killing PC game sales and in turn the PC gaming market.

Epic isn't out to make you buy new hardware, they want to make games to make money. By not allowing the game to run WELL on a Radeon 9700 or GeForce FX, they could potentially alienate a large chunk of their customers, and quite frankly, they simply wont do that.

Perhaps the aforementioned cards wont run at extreme detail levels, but the game will most likely run very nicely at toned down quality settings and still look pretty amazing.

Oh, and I predict that anyone with a 6800GT+ will run any UE3 game at full detail.

Also, I don't know if many gamers realize this, but most any programmer can have any number of resource-intensive features (HDR, stencil shadows etc...) up and running in an engine if you give it enough power, but the real key is to have a cutting edge game, running on 3+ year old HW, while still having it look absolutely amazing.

The FRAPS counter becomes pointless if the specs are unknown.

hmmm 35 FPS in some areas, this doesnt make me feel good. Im willing to bet its on a SLI config of some sorts, just a guess.

It will take a monster machine to run these games unless you plan on going 1024x768. I doubt my X1800XT will handle this game in anything but maybe 1280x1024 with low AA/AF.
