Is it just me or are they frickin' huge now?

I was actually going to ask the same thing. They seem to have added another row near the top. Personally, I liked it before without the huge adds.
Better?
I replaced a two row table of links on the second row with an ad. The first ad was 728x90 and I switched it to 468x60. At a 1280x1024 desktop resolution, the 728x90 ad isn't that overbearing, but most visitors use 1024x768. With the 468x60 ad, the length of the page increased by 34 pixels.

it's a little better yeah, I mean...it's not a huge deal, it'll just take time to get used to having to scroll a bit more. No biggie. :)

If they bother you you can get adblock. Firefox extension, blocks all ads and any other images you don't like to see.
