View Full Version : R520 delayed?

ATI's R520 delayed until autumn (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=23097)
The Inquirer got Computex date wrong, they think it in July, Computex (http://www.computextaipei.com.tw/) is open from 31 May to 4 June 2005.
If R520 does delayed by 2 months then here must be a reason for the delay, I think it has to do with the yield or ATI did not want to repeat mistakes they did with no X800 XT PE and X850 XT PE products in store 30 days after the launch.
THere was a fire at a facility where erm they get substrates from....that may be the reason
Who would have thought that a R520 is not faster than two 6800U in SLI. Funny, I could have sworn that weeks ago some people on the net had said the exact opposite.
The next graphiccard battle is going to be more interesting than I at first believed :)
THere was a fire at a facility where erm they get substrates from....that may be the reason and throw on top of that that xbox360 chips are really gonna put a damper on there supply of substrats. i think this shows that ati is focusing on xbox rather then there core pc buisness.
i dont think this is a good thing .... to me it sounds like ati is stumbling again. and nvidia is getting focused on its core buisness and is really starting to dominate again ... i think in the long run this could be a bad thing for competition and the industry as a whole.

If true, it's pretty much a direct mirror of what happened to NVIDIA for XBox 1.

It was never annouced by ATI in any form so no loss really. Infact isnt the Inq the ones who annouced its launch and are not delaying it? :p

Meh the only thing competition has done is drive prices up. 2 generations ago cards were at $300, now they may debut at $700. If this is what competition brings, the world could use a few more monopolies.

There isn't a doubt that the competition has given us much better products though. If one company was selling more don't you think the company would lower prices accordingly?

tru dat.
It's getting ridiculous and upgrading often is no longer an option for me. This 6800 has to last me at least another year (it's almost been a year already!) unless I get a raise or massive OT at work...
I agree, upgrading is becoming a b*tch, ESPECIALLY with all the dual gpu's now, so one $700 card isnt enough, now you need two. It's almost like they want to kill the pc gaming community. They killed agp way too early, considering 8x was never really acheived. So now, next generation, you have to buy a new mobo and cpu that support pci-e, THEN the gpu itself, and forbid u want two gpu's. It's just becoming too much, maybe I will go the route of sat. and just buy an xbox2 and say to hell with it.

I agree, if their chargin 5-7 hundred for a card, it better beat what last gen offered, two cards or one.
This news is neither confirmed nor denied.
I think the main point is to TALK ABOUT the product.

You need two ? Really ? Wow.
So I guess everyone with less than 2 6800U in SLI can't play any game out there. No, wait, lemme check. 6600GT... Uhm ... HL2, 1024x768 AA 2x, smooth as silk. Doom3 1024x768 AA 2x, same thing. NFS:U2 1024x768 AA4x, AF4x and not a problem. Colin 2005 1024x768 AA2x, same thing. Should I go on ?
Get a reality check mate, you don't need two gfx cards to be able to enjoy a great gaming experience. You only want them because of your need for the latest and greatest.
So you want to always be on the edge ? Guess what, you have to pay for it.
But don't spread fud with bs like "now you need two".

Wonderful Rant, thank you, didn't have a shred of truth behind it but thank you. Now prepare to be raped by F.E.A.R. and EQ2.

Sure, now come and tell me that if you're not playing at 1600x1200 AA 4x and AF 16x you ain't gonna enjoy it. Bah.
We have played for *years* at 800x600 16bit and at the time that was "wow".
I reiterate, you don't need a top-of-the-line SLI setup to enjoy *any* of the games out now or in the next 1 or 2 yrs.
Most of the gamers out there don't even have a 6600, not to mention a twin 6800U in SLI.
Go check Valve's statistics if you don't believe me.
And I say it again, you don't need two cards to play. You may want them (for whatever reason you like), but you definetely don't need them.
how do you know we wont need them? Have you beta tested prey? Quake 4? Stalker? Oblivion? 2 days to vegas? F.e.a.r?
For you 800x600 is enough, but for the enthusiast, 1024x768 is the lowest resoltuion to game on. When I said " now you'll need two" you miss quoted and mis-read what I was saying. I didn't mean you WILL need two. I was being sarcastic like ati and nvidia are gonna push " you need two now" as if $500 of your money isnt enough.
If you have a problem with me, PM me, no need to endlessly rant and thread crap in a conversation that was going pretty well.

Never said that it is enough for me *now. Go reread my sentence. I said that at the time (that is, some years ago) that was the res most of the ppl played at. Simple.
but for the enthusiast, 1024x768 is the lowest resoltuion to game on.
Sure, and you said the magic word, "enthusiast". See. the point was that saying that "It's almost like they want to kill the pc gaming community" is a little over the top. ;)
The pc gaming community isn't goin' anywhere. It's here, and will be for the years to come, no matter what new 2k$ monster card ATI, NV, or IMTHENEWKINGOFGFX will put out.
People is still playing with old GF4s out there, and the ones developing games know it well. It's not that Quake 4, Oblivion, F.e.a.r. or Stalker won't be playable by people who don't have a top of the line dual G70 sli setup.
So, technically, you don't need (and won't need) a sli setup.
When I said " now you'll need two" you miss quoted and mis-read what I was saying. I didn't mean you WILL need two. I was being sarcastic like ati and nvidia are gonna push " you need two now" as if $500 of your money isnt enough.
Cool, maybe I misundertstood, but I re-read your msg, and it still doesn't sound too much sarcastic to me. :)
If you have a problem with me, PM me
See, I don't have any problem with you. And I don't know where have I written anything that could lead you into thinking that.
You said one thing, I said I don't agree. Simple. As long as I can tell anyone here is entitled to his/her ideas.
no need to endlessly rant and thread crap in a conversation that was going pretty well.
Thread crap ? 'Cause, God forgive me, I challenged one of your posts ?
See, I'm interested in what kind of new gpu will ATI and NV come out with just like anyone here. Only, I won't loose my sleep if I won't be able to afford one as soon as they're available. It'd only mean I'll wait 6 months or 1 yr and I'll get them then. :)
(oh, and yes, I have to say that re-reading my first msg, yes, the last like could've sounded a little harsh, it wasn't meant to be.)
PS: both NV and ATI are putting out gfx cards that cost 500-700$ only because they know that there's a number of ppl out there that'll buy them, no matter the price. And because the one who have the fastest 1k$ gpu sells more 80$ ones ;) :)

My LCDs native resolution is 1600x1200. Lowest I'll play at is 1280xXXX. Past that the interpolation is absolutely disgusting. So yes, I ain't gonna play it unless I get 1600x1200 and some AA.
Wow, now that was great, we conclude that ...it depends from person to person on how many cards he wants...
so let it get over there.
back to the topic.
I still feel r520 wil be shown at computex, and is not really delayed.
Reason: coz G70 is said* to be making an appearence in computex, so ATi wont leave itself behind..now will it?

We have played for *years* at 800x600 16bit and at the time that was "wow".
That was then...you know, when 800x600 was extreme and totally 1337...up from totally killer 640x480.
I reiterate, you don't need a top-of-the-line SLI setup to enjoy *any* of the games out now or in the next 1 or 2 yrs.
If games weren't supposed to look ridiculously good, they wouldn't have the options to make them look that way. You need SLI to enjoy a lot of games the way they were meant to be played--maxxxed out. If you can't see that: you're a moron.
Most of the gamers out there don't even have a 6600, not to mention a twin 6800U in SLI.
Well, they aren't real gamers then, are they?

Well thats how u play it. not everyone has an LCD with supporting res of 1600x1200.
people do enjoy at 1280x1024 with 4xaa and 4xasx @60 fps. so its again from person to person.

U need SLi to get u more than reqd required FPS. single cards do get 60fps in games like doom3 and 60+ constant fps in hl2 with 1280x1024res and all eye candy. in the future yes, sli will be kindaa beneficial. now too it loox good, but is expensive for many.
where ppl cant afford hi-end LCD's wat will be the use of SLi.
Well, they aren't real gamers then, are they
Talk abt REAL gamers, well u knw what, almost 50% of the pr0's in games like CS Quake3, unreal, war3 etc.. still workout with gf mx 440, fx 5200 etc. and yeh, they are pro's ..they beat the Sh!t outta us, us, ppl with 6800's etc.
so u dont require a hi-end gaming system to be a so called REAL gamer. its ur look out how u wanna play games. u can enjoy the same game on 800x600 res too. CS pr0's out there play on 640 res. and yeh..they are REAL gamers..not FAKE.
anyways. this thread has gone far away from the topic. so plz get bak to track.

cool ive always wanted to play q-IV at that res .... pfff we need to brind john carmack in... he has had it wrong all this time... who is he to think that pushing the envelope in technology is a good thing ....

really i thought all games coming out from now on required it.... didnt you know that sli is gonna be the minimum to play games ;)
