I played Far Cry on Ati 9800 Pro and loved it

I got a 6800nu and loved that too apart from Far Cry. It had various texture problems with squares of colour which were cured by really turning down the ram speed and a certain driver. I never cured the dreaded jittering I had though. So it sat on the side. The CD got scratched and became unplayable

Now I have a 6600GT and so I spent hours downloading the demo to make sure it has no problems with stuttering before buying the game again.

Blocks of textures missing ( black squares of shadow )
The sea looks like **** , textures not rendered well, looks like very low detail.

No stuttering though yet !

Is this a one off with the demo, or does my Far Cry curse continue ? Shame, I like the open environments much more than the cramped corridors of Doom3.

Any thoughts welcome, I have used 7189 and 6693 drivers and fiddled with the control panel video and ingame settings to no avail.

The demo was released before the GF 6 series came to market and has not been updated. You need to get the full game in order to have proper support for those cards.

Thanks Sat, thought it must be along those lines.

that's probably because you are like me, when you get free time you end up posting on web sites, surfing for info you do not need and following links. By the time you are ready to play a game you have to do something else or the door bell rings. ... :)

LOL! I'm just like that! I'll sit around surfing pointless websites when I know I should be loading up a game, and then BOOM, an hour or two has gone by and I need to go back into the real world. When I do load a game I ask myself everytime " why didn't I do this earlier " ;)

That's the main reason why I'm parting out my entire system. I didn't spend over $1,000 on hardware to just have it sit as a Web surfing box.

The reason is there is just no big games right now. Wait until all the games start coming out.

exactly. If unreal 2007 had just been released this week we'd all be busy playing. Heck, wait one more month till Battlefield 2 arrives, we'll be busy again. ;) Just a dry spell right now. I can't believe in 5 days half-life 2 will already be 6 months old! And Farcry is one year and 2 months old already. We need some new stuff.

am i growing out of it?

I personally am not growing out of it, but rather, my tastes changing. I'm moving more towards the consoles. Xbox 360 and PS3 have me more excited than anything that's coming out for PC in the near future.

Such is life.

I get that way during a system launch, but then a year or two later when pc graphics rebound and look even better I jump back into pcgaming, graphics aside, i'm all about fps games currently, keyboard/mouse and high res is all for me. I'll still probably buy xbox2, but honestly, I didnt find anything worth playing on xbox. I'm such a sucker for " the hype " i'll stand in line at midnight for a xbox2 and then 3 weeks later when the hype dies down, wonder why I even got one. Happens all the time. :: cough cough psp cough cough ::

I have to admit you do feel guilty buying all the latest hardware and then not playing that many games, but like said above maybe there are not that many games out there that really hit home. F.E.A.R might be good though.

The games I have really played for a long time in the last few years are

Civ2
Command and Conquor versions
Far Cry
Soldier of Fortune
RTCW

( So I guess I wish RTCW2 and SOF3 based on Doom3 engine were coming out soon, if at all )

A lot of games get played once. A lot of games I play for 30 minutes and then put on the back of the shelf, such a waste of money

I just bought Far Cry for 12.67, reduced from the original 34.99. One of the advantages of buying late. I bundled it with HL2 at reduced price. I have half way got through the demo, spend most of my time showing visitors the gravity gun and the circular saw blades to actually finish it. Maybe this time.

Andy

Haha yea I agree. Sometimes I play a demo more than I play the final game. I can remember I would play the quake2 demo over and over again. I finally got the full version.. and hardly played it at all. heh

I love to see good games fly on the latest hardware. While I worked at NVIDIA I would bring home samples of the latest NV2x--and then NV3x--board to see how it performed on the latest game releases.

Yet I haven't been able to bring myself to buy a video card since I left NVIDIA. I play only Doom3 and UT200x, and not enough to warrant expense on upgrades. I tend to stick to the same games over and over, once I learn them. I'm more likely to buy Doom3 for xBox than buy a GeForce 6x00.

Plus it's really hard to pay for things I used to get for free. I keep trying to get one of my buddies who still works there to scam me a NV4x card, but it's not happening. *sigh*

Anyone else fall asleep when leaning back in the chair after heavy web surfing? I too net surf when I should be getting into some serious single or mutliplayer gaming. And then sometimes just as I'm ready to fire up the game I fall asleep and lose 2 or 3 hours while in dreamland. Damn. Well at least it helps me get a little rested before work. The more comfortable the gaming chair the more likely it is to zone out like that.

I broke the back to my chair to avoid this, it still connects but if you put any weight on it, it falls back. Keeps me from sleepin and a great trick for n00bs to the house too. :D

Start playin an MMO and it will instantly cure you of the part-time gamer ailment. I know this for a fact . . . look at my xfire numbers.

'World of WarCraft-All Time: 166 hrs.'

all my other games that I 'play'(every one of them first person shooters of some kind) have about an hour to less than an hour(cept for hl2dm-6hrs. buddy of mine likes to play it when im not on WoW)logged on them.

You know its kind of odd that you mention it because when I get bored with WoW(it does happen believe me)I actually get more involved with my games then before I started playing WoW. Hmmm . . . maybe there's some scientific answer to all this . . . .

meh. I'm gonna go play some WoW.

Aint that the truth. I think I've spent more time talkign HL2 than playing it. That said gaming is probably at number 5 or 6 in my interests list behind Music, poltitics, socialising etc...

LOL, I set myself a 10pm limit on weeknights, go watch the news, which invariably sends me to sleep. Cool nerdy trick though.

How do I enable GOD mode in FarCry 1.3? I have -devmode in the command line but pressing backspace does nothing. Does anyone know how to enable it?

Thanks
