But is it really worth it?

Currently I have a Athlon XP 2700+ and a 9800 Pro @ XT Speeds (plan to go to 450mhz on the core and 400mhz on the memory ((atleast thats my goal)) when my vf700cu arrives).

ANYWAYZ: I've noticed in a lot of games I play (mainly UT2K3, Doom 3, Half Life 2, Far Cry, and CS Source that my frame rate always takes a nose dive around every corner. My goal is to try and stabilize those frames per seconds. Would say a Athlon 64 3200+ 939 Venice and a MSI K8N NEO2 PLATINUM do the job for me? If I do upgrade to Athlon 64 I would then later upgrade to perhaps a 6800 GT or maybe a G70. Im just trying to extend the life on my 9800 XT untill the new cards come out for AGP. Any advice is appreciated.

Note: Socket 754 is out of the question.

3200+, MSI Neo2 Plat, and a 6800GT
and your all set!

You'll notice that all your games will play much "smoother"

Well I cant do it all at once. do either cpu and motherboard now and then video card in about a month and a half from now or video card now then cpu + mobo later. hmmm.

Awesome in the fact that you kept the set up you have. I need to take a page outta your book and learn to do that. I just ordered the fx 55 and asus board . I spend too much money ..just a hardware junkie :D

I would say it would be well worth it to up grade to the a 64 you'll be happy you did! Good Luck! and have fun!

but which first, geforce 6800 gt or athlon 64.... i could possibly do geforce 6800 gt and 1gb of pc3200 ram and see how far i can overclock this cpu (i know it can do 410mhz fsb just that the memory is holding me back severely.)

Put the VF700-cu on the 6800 gt :p

I had a VGA Silencer Rev.3 on my 9800 Pro, flashed to XT but kept Pro speeds, worked great. That card is now just keeping cozy in a static bag on my desk :( but I went with the Vf700-cu for my Evga 6800gt.

I say get the A64+mobo now and wait a few more months for the g70 or r520. Id rather have a new g70 for my A64 than a new A64 for my 6800 gt.

If you aren't overclocking I recommend going with something other than the MSI. The Asus A8V is a stable board with a much better layout and fewer idiosyncracies.
