I found this Samsung 793DF monitor from PC Nation (http://www.pcnation.com/web/details.asp?item=E03643) to replace my Sony Trinitron with messedup front panel buttons. The price is right and I have heard good things about Samsung in general. Does anyone have any experience with this monitor? Is it a good replacement for my beloved Trinitron?

Yeah thats pretty terrible... my Gateway EV500 15" from 1998 did 1280x1024 @ 60Hz.

Keep looking and you'll find a much better monitor for probably less money.

I will be using 1024x768 @ 85 hz or 1152x864 @ 85 hz only. With a 17" display and a mediocre vid card it's all I like to use.

I want to know how good picture quality is and how bright & clear it is and if there is edge distortion. I can look at specs all day long and the specs look good for me (& I have looked all around but have found nothing better for the price)- I want to hear from people who have used one and can tell me first hand how it looks.

It has blurry visual compare to sony trinitron - you willl likely hate it.

It 's left/right border are some how rendering crusty picture ( tile pattern) < if that's the word.

and 1024x768 can do 85mhz 1152x865 can 75mhz

but its' best for its price

My old 17" Samsung 753DF(still in use) was nice and sharp though, all thruout.. In a way, I actually like it better than my 19" 997df. I got that like 4 years ago for like $150... I will honestly rank that 17" monitor up with more of the expensive ones (as long as you don't go above 1024x768).. Not quite a _highend_ trinitron, but it looks nice. I sometimes wonder if Samsung switched over to a cheaper tube on its newer monitors..

I kinda know what you mean by the tile.. I don't really notice it, but if you sit very close to the screen, you may notice it.. But what about the two lines across the Trinitron screens? They annoy me sometimes too.

You should be able to get a newer 997DF 19" Samsung for like $200 or less(or whatever is the newest).. It does 1152x865 at 100 Hz. I have this one, .. For the price, its okay... Little wierd on the left side though, like its every slightly pinched in. If i could do it again, eh, I _might_ have just spend the extra dough on a better monitor.. but that would be expensive..... like 2x the $. So I dunno.. I'm Slightly disappointed with th 19" , cause the 17" I mentioned above, was great. This 19" 997df is simply okay, cause of the price factor...

BTW, I don't know how some of you use anything above 1024x768 on any 17" monitor.. I hate tiny text on monitor, that makes you lean foward toward your monitor when you are carefull reading something, like code.. I like to set it up so I can carefully read all the text while I'm leaning back on my chair.

My coworker has a nice LCD screen. so he says, "well I can use the high rez and such cause its so clear".. but guess what.. when we're pair programming or helping debug stuff, we inevetably have to start leaning in closer to the LCD.. cause the letters are just too small!! lol
