hehe also dispells the wacky claims that "Uuum.. D3 enjone cant do water.." I heard somewhere in a wild debate (the kind that usually surrounds this engine)

Holy..cow! Moohh!
Awesome stuff, thanks for the link. I hereby retract everything i've said about the D3 engine. :D Hehe, nah, i've always loved the engine, but this is more than i expected. :)

Anyone elce not getting any sound?
This article at Gamespot contains a bit more information about John Carmack's Megatexture Mapping Technology.
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/enemyterritoryquakewars/preview_6126170.html
"The megatexture is essentially one huge, continuous texture map that can stretch all the way to the horizon, without any need for fog or other effects to mask a limited draw distance or texture tiles that repeat and show seams at the edges."
The also mentioned that some Doom III technology is being used for Quake Wars and that Quake Wars does not look like Doom III.

Too BAd you would never see it in Doom3 world.. or any mods..
it is the "Doom3 engine" in the same way Splintell CEll chaos theory is Unreal tournament 2003 engine.. That the best thing about being a game developer with talent.. you can upgrade or license any engine and do miracles there. i think it is more like a Doom3.5 engine.. :)

Apologies, but this is simply untrue. How many times do I have to say - water is a shader effect, along with about 3 passes (refracted image pass, reflected image pass, final pass), plus some time effects to get it to move correctly. Doing it well is difficult, but there's NO REASON WHATSOEVER that Doom 3 couldn't have it in - so long as there's reflective see through glass in D3 (which I assume there is - though I've not played properly), it's a fairly trivial thing to add time and therefore water.
there is already a mod that has water too, cant find the site for it..
here is another tho:

Dark mod features swimmable water according to their site, no screens with it tho..

the waters looking just amazing .. looks as good as HL2's if not better.
too bad its coming on 2006 though :o
Man, it's 2006 too? I think I'd rather not know anything or see anything until a month before the game is released.

wow, if that is what it's going to look like in game, this will be some serious Unreal3 competition.
all I can say is thank goodness for Carmack and his Doom3 OpenGL engine which is pwning DirectX as usual.
quake4 is going to use a totally new rendering engine iirc -- unless they changed their minds. the D3 engine was just an intermediate engine to get to the q4 engine.

Um Quake 4 is using the Doom 3 Engine, They might modify it to suit thier needs but it wont be a drastic change.
/me shrugs
i guess the information i'm going on is out of date, heh. not a surprise, i heard that before doom3 was even released iirc.

From what I understand, it's like a Doom3 1.5 engine. It's basically the Doom3 eninge (which is damn advanced and underutilized as it is) with some new technologies like this "Super texture" or whatever it is.

Yeah, same here...especially the mech part.
Too bad we have to wait till 2006 for this game :(
ok am i the only one here that is just "mehhh" to all the current and future games.... ya the graphics looks amazing...but the game play is about the same as everything else out there...just more world interaction...mehhh..... i think its time for some developer to come out with a more interactive setup...were the player has visual (vr goggles) and interactive gloves..that would allow a player to not just visually interact with the world but tacktly ....
Yea, but who would buy it? Remember the Virtual Boy? lol :D
