Hi,

today I installed the new Netscape 8.0.1 to give it a try. Up to now I can't really see benefits - I am a Firefox-user. I think it's good to have the choice between the Gecko and IE-Rendering engine.

However, it seems that this version has serious problems running under restricted (user) accounts on WinXP SP2 Home Systems. At startup, Netscape asks to choose a user profile. Since its a new install, no profile is available. I click on "Create Profile...". Netscape suggests to store it at "C:\Documents and Settings\stefan\Application Data\Netscape\NSB\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.stefan." Then I get the notice: "Profile couldn't be created. Probably the chosen folder isn't writable." If I choose another directory, Netscape dies - I have a CPU load of 55% (Intel Pentium 4 HT 2.6GHz, 1GB RAM), and have to call the task manager :p

Netscape 8 is based on the version 1.0.3 of the Mozilla Firefox browser. It also supports the Internet Explorer rendering engine. However, the latest version of the Mozilla Firefox browser is 1.0.4. The recently launched update fixed several crucial issues in the rendering engine of the 1.0.3 version.

This means that the latest ‘secure’ release of the Netscape Browser 8 suffers from the same issues when it is using the Mozilla rendering engine. This makes the browser vulnerable to two vulnerabilities rated “extremely critical” by security monitoring company Secunia.
