Yes spyware can cause many issues with your hardware. You should try Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) before you format. Maybe it will save you some trouble.

Who told you that? some OEM tech support guy? Spyware just makes stuff run really slow and enough of it will cause your system to be generally unstable. I guess if you have a really old 4x or 8x CDR that doesn't have buffer-underrun protection then spyware could be the problem. But if the rest of your system seems normal and your problem is just with your CDR alone, then its something else.

I've seen spyware that can make CD-R drives open and close on their own. Simply running Ad-Aware quickly fixed it.

Virus or spyware could mess with the software that he uses to burn cd's.
