Hi,
I was trying to restore files that I backed up using Microsoft's backup utility but I could not access one of the folders, namely the documents and settings. I am denied access to filed in these folders and I am puzzled by it. I think the reason is that, the backup file is on another computer networked to mine and I restored the info from that computer. When I transferred the filed to my computer, it restores everything fine. Does anyone know how I can delete a filed that says, Access denied? I tried to boot into DOS but I can't get the C: drive, I think probably because it is SATA. Thanks.

Are you talking about as in the file is in use? If so do delete these files its easy, Open a command prompt and then Ctrl+Alt+Del and while the command prompt is up kill the explorer.exe process. Then in the command prompt move to the folder and use the delete command to get rid of the file, it shouldn't give you an issue.

You could try changing the ntfs file security and take ownership of the file... Usually solves it or do the above which also works. :)

Try this. You need ot be signed is as the administrator. First you have to take ownership of the folder. How to take ownership of a folder (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421)

Then you can set permissions on the folder so your regular account can access the folder. How to set permissions on a folder (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308418)

Then you can log in like usual and you should have access to the folder.

Hope this helps.

Thats pretty goofy that an OS would denie the superuser permissions to delete files.

Microsoft really just needs to give a simple right click menu selection and a cmd prompt command that tells you what process's/users/accounts have a lock on files.
