as a side comment, i always liked the fact that Quake 3 had such a variety of player models, whereas in UT they were all human.
well it depends who prefers what moust
and Halo was in development for very long time in Quake 2 days , it looked like crap also and it was released only on Xbox but was developed for PC ...i might be wrong though :p

Good list of games. Never played Tribes 2 and I'll probably still buy UT2k3 but I agree with you that they should put more human looking people in the game.
There are humans. Of the six races, the mercenaries are human (though I don't remember the story.)
The races are all, of course, from different planets, and with a mutator you can make them all have race specific characteristics.
As to looking fruity, I don't expect a quantum leap in the way of grungy style textures until we get much better cards-aka directx 9 and up...and games that use em.
As to the rest of the game, I gotta tell you. The video I have looks fantastic, and it's not very good quality so thats saying something.
Then the game. I'm not a deathmatch fan, really. I loved UT though, so I suspect I'll love the new ver.
Anyway, have fun. I personally thought the UT character models weren't that great either, but maybe thats just me. Much better than quake 3, imo.
i liked UT when they came out with a better opengl patch because i dared not play it in d3d
other games that used the quake3 engine all looked really good and unique but with games that used the ut engine i could tell right away that it was a ut engine game. so that made it hard for me to get interested in those games because they looked like ut but played way differently. for me, i guess thats one example of how "graphics matters" in a game. (because it looked like ut, i was expecting a ut style game, maybe? )
