View Full Version : Is it worth getting a 6800GT now?

I used to have a 6800GT in the beginning of this year, sadly nothing thus far that came out on PC has captured my interest or made me want to push my graphics card to its limits. I now have a 6600GT. Since the 6800GTs are now cheap, is it worth to get a 6800GT or wait up for the G70/7800GTX or whatever next line of cards till end of this year.

Will I be able to play FEAR, BF2 and Age of Empires 3 on my 6600GT this year. Or shall I get a 6800GT when G70 hits market for like 200 bucks?

I really can't decide since there is nothing on PC today making me want to get a high end graphics card or is there? Let me know of any games I would want to pump frames with a 6800GT and is new (2005).

P.S. My least bearable graphics settings are 1024*768 w/ 4xAA and 8xAF. See sig for other details.

The least bearable settings you mentioned will be playable on a 6800GT for some time to come really. The 6800GT still churns out pretty good framerates these days and you'll have full SM 3.0 compatibility. The question of whether a 6600GT to a 6800GT being worth it? Well thats a tough one to answer. There will be a noticable improvement and the 6800GT is gaurenteed to run the titles you mentioned better than a 6600GT. The decision is yours in the end.

It best to wait for Geforce 7800 GT, it should be available in July. :D

^ thats what I would recomend, Wait after the 7800s come out just to see how big of difference it will be. And if you want to get a 6800 GT wait until the price goes down which it should in next mouth as in july.

The 7800's gonna be at least 60% faster then a 6800 Ultra based on 50% more pipes, 33% more vertex shaders and other improvments.

Definetely wait for the 7800GT. It will be available at the beginning of July.

Wait for the GeForce 7 series.

Anyone have an idea how much the 7800GT will be going for when they're introduced?

If the 7800 is like the 6800 then the price will be high when it first comes out.

i would go with the 6800gt. the g70 is gonna be great, but it will be double the price of a 6800. and if you get a 6800 now, you will have a card wil be able to handle your gaming for alot longer than the 6600, so you can wait for the prices of the g70 to come down even more

Wait, don't get it. Wait and get the R520, a single R520 will even beat two-6800Ultra is SLI mode. It'll be the new king of video card once it comes out.

keep in mind, that noone knows for sure what will happen the next round. noonoe ever does. nvidia may win, ati may win.. hell, XGI may have some uber-fast card.

try not to lay claim to things we arent sure of yet

something tells me we wont be seeing AGP versions for a while after the launch.

Also, how long do you plan on keeping the rest of your setup? Buying another AGP card now seems well quite frankly stupid IMO.

seeing that they had bridge chips ready for a while...why not? :p

06-08-05, 09:38 AM
it all depends on your setup. if you just got an agp board, you may not feel like changing it out just yet. but if you are like me, the days of pci express are fast approaching

Last year Nvidia released the 6800 in April.
Yet there was not a 6800 to be found until August. Not just for me but no one could get one anywhere except the people who won them at the Nvidia lan.
If Nvidia releases the 7800 in July it could very well be November before a store has one.

Hmm.. here are the answer to a few questions that people have posed. Thus far, the responses here are too varied and I am getting confused.

Ok here is the deal.

I have had this system for over 1.75 years now.
I can get an AGP card or a PCI Ex card w/ the bridge chip.
I won't wait more than september to get a new card (and I never pay above the MSRP).

So what are my options now, I can grab an X800 XL cheap soon, is that worth anything? Any help would be nice.

No, I would not buy any x800 anything right now. They suck.
6800 perform as well as x800 in all games or better. Nvidia is clearly the dominant video card engineer.
